Fires close BNSF Stevens Pass route
I took Amtrak from Chicago to Seattle in the winter of 1976. My ticket was for the day after I arrived in Chicago on the Lake Shore, and at the ticket window the agent said I should just go to the train and ask the conductor if he could find a seat for me on the supposedly sold-out train. He told me to find a seat in the dome until he could assign me to a seat, but I loved it so much up there, and he let me stay there for the entire trip.
The relevance of this post to the article is that the train went over Stampede Pass. Snow all the way up the eastern slope and lush green on the way down the western slope. Too bad they can’t reroute over Stampede Pass when Stevens Pass is closed.
And where is the good old Milw. Rd. when you need it?
The good ol’ Milwaukee had it’s share of problems with forest fires, too, notably the destructive fire of 1910.
