FireUp2100 fundraising appeal launched
Considering that former Reading trackage is part of the Norfolk Southern now, the 2100 could definitely be part of the 21st Century Steam program.
This one made it to Minnesota yesterday.
Dare I say that the name of the campaign was inspired by ‘Fire Up 611!’ campaign?
Doesn’t this have old friction bearings? Would be better if they could swap it for 2124 at Steamtown, which is all roller bearings. Steamtown certainly will never restore the 2124 so for display, who cares?
2124 has roller bearings, but would require a LOT of money and time to restore it. It hasn’t run for something close to 50 years. 2100 did run only a few years ago. Steamtown has a link that gives an insight into 2124’s condition relative to a couple other engines they have concerning the possibility of restoration. A further complication of swapping could be the sticky issue of ownership. http://www.nps.gov/stea/upload/reading2124response.pdf
If the “fire up…” works for one, why not another? I am excited to see the efforts put forth to restore these amazing machines to operation! I can’t wait for my kids to see these in action.
