First Barcelyon Intermodal Express operates

Tuesday December 21st marked the first operation of the Barcelyon Express, an Intermodal train from the Port of Barcelona, Spain to Lyon, France without a change of Locomotives or bogies (freight car trucks) at the border with France. This is the first step for freight of the gradual conversion of Spain from Broad Gauge to Standard Gauge. This is expected to revitalize rail freight in Spain where Rail’s market share has fallen to just 3 percent. Surprisingly, or perhaps not given the low level of freight rail, the largest freight operator is FEVE, a narrow-gauge railway in the north of Spain. There is a lot of interest in transferring freight to rail for long distance Perishables and Auto Parts, that has been held back by the long delays caused by the need to change gauge at the French border.
