First batch of BNSF Dash8-40CWs ready for CN

The first batch of former BNSF Dash-8-40CWs have received patch relettering for CN at Barstow. The locomotives are numbered above the ex-C&NW units.Contrary to previous information it appears that some odd number locomotives are included in this batch. Former BNSF numbers are scattered between 800 and 865

do you know where these loco will be used in what areas? So i can get pics. rambo1…

As far as I know they will be mainly used in Canada in DPU service.

i dont know what dpu means. rambo1…

Distributed Power Unit

Pretty much what he said. If circumstances warrant railroads will add locomotives somewhere near the middle of a train or at the end of a train for better train handling. Helps in managing drawbar forces, air management, braking (air and dynamic), and slack management.

Distributed power. Known by the trade name Locotrol, though nobody has used that name since the 1980s.

Well if they get the same treatment as the ex-CNW units, no they will not be equiped for DP service.

Quite interesting shot, thanks for sharing. I had information from what I considered a fairly reliable source. How could one tell if a loco was equipped for DPU?

Computer screens and electronic air brakes would be an easy way of telling. They may get them in future, but all CN did was paint them, put new seats in the cab, install fridges, hotplates and microwaves and put them into service.

The former ATSF units they are getting came from GE set up for DPU. Odds were slaves Evens were the Masters. So the controls should be there already. Unless BNSF removed them. I know this because ATSF was trying to get 844 delivered before 3751 pulled the Employee train across the System in the early 90’s this way the Radio call would have been 3751 to 844. Instead they had to settle for 3751 to 819 instead.

What kind of system though? Locotrol 2, 3, 4? CN doesn’t like using any systems older than Locotrol LEB. CN would have to reprogram them anyway to communicate with CN locomotives.

Will I be able to see any of these units at the mac millan yary in north toronto?rambo1…

Folks:

Just got an update on the movement of these locomotives: They are now apparently enroute from Barstow, CA. to Memphis,TN.

“…Train # D BARMEM3 26 left Barstow, CA this morning (3/26) at 10:00 with the
remaining BNSF-CN engines, plus an additional bunch of BNSF C40-8W’s are in
the consist - totaling 54 units…”

My guess is that they will cross the Cherokee Sub thru TULSA enroute to Memphis across the Thayer Sub on BNSF. Probably to interchange with CN at Memphis at Harrison Yard. Just a guess.
