First building in 25 years

This is my first building in 25 years. The windows haven’t been glazed yet but I need to know how it looks to you.

It looks great! Nicely and realistically weathered, great job!

Very nice. Did you weather the car and tracks, too?

Tom

Hi Tom

Yes. This has been a long work in progress. This is my first building and I,m about to start scenery and ballast. I just needed to know if it was time to move on from here.

Thanks Wayne

Very nice. Brickwork looks good. It’s level and square. Joints don’t show. Have you considered adding some exterior details, say electric service, or a window blocked off with an exhaust fan? I put downspouts on a similar building. Probably not needed on a flat roof building like this one, such roofs were pitched slightly to a drain in the center of the building.

C’mon now, you can’t fool us experts, thats a photo of a real building !

Would like to see whole building hidden by boxcar, but mortar looks to heavy in spots, also those are friction bearing trucks and should be grimy black from grease splatters, same with wheel surfaces.mh

Very nice. Doesn’t look like you lost your touch.

Have fun,

Richard

You nailed it, great job. [wow]

Hi M Horton

When I did an india ink and alcohol wash the building turned quite white. After it dried it looked much better but still too white. I’m going to try and dry brush some red over the whole building and see what happens.

Ok I made some changes now I need to know if this is better.

wrumbel:

The building looks quite good but I think only a very old rather dilapidated brick building would be suffering so much decay, i.e. mortar deterioration. If you are modeling a very old structure, then leave it as it is.

If you want to tone down the mortar wash then you might try rubbing the building down with some Q tips dipped in alcohol, or perhaps giving the surface a very light rub with a brick coloured artist’s pencil on its side.

Mr. Horton’s opinions on your building seems to be in the minority. I will stay with my opinion that your building would look very nice on my own layout and I think I have a very good artistical eye, meaning my opinion is also a valid one!

The op asked for opinions, I gave mine. You sir, I’ll use that loosely, are making a statement about artistic abilities, YOU don’t know me, or what I’ve accomplished. I’m damn sure of my “eye”, and by reading other posts by you, you’re an overly opinionated person who thinks your way is the only way. By the way, that’s my real name, I don’t hide behind some bogus moniker. mh

Still good. The two treatments are different but I cannot say I like one better than the other. They are both good. Have you considered adding signage?

Thanks to everyone who looked

This is going to be my freight station, it’s located at the end of my yard. The kit is 2 DPM Laube Linen mills with a little rearranging of the track side wall. When I was looking at it after I did the india ink was it looked pretty white in the mortar lines. The picture made it look better but I thought I’d post the picture and see what you thought. I tried to tone it down by dry brushing more red onto the walls. This is the second picture I posted, I like it better this way. I wanted to get this part right before adding window glazing and other details in case there was going to be a complete repaint.

Thanks for looking

Wayne

The highest percentage of people who gave opinions on your building did so in a positive manner. I like what you did and said I would be happy with how it turned out, if I had done it.

Yes, I have my opinions and many times I may disagree with how others think. However, in this case I have agreed with the majority that this building looks good.

I have never seen any reason for people to be critical of other’s work and quite frankly others having a critical nature is what sets me off. I see being critical as showing no skills at communication and having absolutely no positive effect. I think all of our mothers tried to teach us better manners than that! It’s a known fact that if you want to get the best results out of people, you build them up, you don’t tear them down! However, a weakness I do have is: I am critical of people who are critical! It is a demonstration to them, that their modus operandi is counter productive!

Back on topic That’s a very good job there mate! Much better than my efforts at weathering…

To the OP…

Those are wonderful models, and I would be proud to have them on my layout. Excellent work by any standards (well, almost any)…

Its a shame that some destructive criticism was offered. If your models were entered in a national NMRA contest, perhaps the negativity might mean something. Otherwise, it sounds like sour grapes to me.

First thanks to all for your comments. This is the start of a lot of structures. This is what is going on on the other side of the isle.
