The first BNSF SD70MAC repainted into H3 has been sighted! Surprisingly, It’s one of the engines originally painted H2 and not one of the former BN or BNSF cream and green Exec MACs.
For Lord Atmo, the earliest BNSF SD70MACs continued BN’s practice of high mounted headlights. This locomotive was delivered to BNSF in the H2 paint scheme.
Early BNSF SD70MACs (Exec 9711, 9712, 9717-9837, H2 9838-9864) had the headlights mounted on the roof just like the BN Exec engines. 9865 and later moved the headlights onto the cab nose.
One big reason I like the 70MAC’s so much is I feel they have great proportions, unlike so many other units out there, making them visually very appealing.
All of the new EMDs delivered in the first few years after the merger had high mounted headlights, also don’t forget that the for the first year or so after the merger the locomotives being delivered would have been spec’d by the pre-merger companies. Also even well after the merger there is no standard to where the headlights are mounted. Take a look at the two orders of SD70ACes, the first order 9370-9399 have high mounted headlights, while the second order 9330-9369 have low mounted headlights. I don’t think that the first order is ex-BN.
NO! THIS ISN’T AN EX-BN ENGINE!!! (Sorry, I had to…)
Some of those early H2 paint jobs really, REALLY didn’t hold up very well. Shoulda sent it to Horicon… [;)] But then again, that’s what BNSF gets for using orange, which typically has a tendency to fade badly.
Say, wouldn’t the BNSF “wedge” look better with another “wedge” at the top…? [}:)]
