First Layout

I am in the process of building my first layout. Its not much but I would like to thank Thor Trains for the layout ideas. I am fond of all the accessories Lionel makes and am happly adding on when my wallet lets me  On an unrelated note, does anyone know if the new GG1 can operate on O27 curves?

Eight switches, right? Lot’s of action. NIce layout. Don’t know anything about the GG1 except it’s expensive.

Very nice layout, especially for a first one. Looks like a lot of fun to run.

As far as the GG1,I’ve got one from the mid 90’s (18313) that does run on O27, but I don’t think it will be able to go through your switches’ curved routes. I think it will hit the switch indicators. It really looks silly around o27 too.

I also think your layout to be a good one. The GG1 not sure which one your talking about but I would hesitate putting one on a layout that size or on O-27 track. I’m getting ready to do a layout come this summer and I’m still trying to figure out how I’m going to work it out as I’m going to try and do 3 lines with the inner one running 2 trains alternately.

The engine you have there is a great little engine I saw one of those first as a donation for the VA here where I work and knew I had to have one so went and bought the set myself also.

You may try some postwar size GP-9’s on that layout it would be great with one of those. Especially if you got one with magnatraction like a 2359 B&M

Nice Layout! My basic idea came from Thor as well!

The postwar GG1s have no problem with O27 track, including the switch machines.

Thanks for correcting me on the switches Bob. It’s been a while since I’ve used that style Lionel switch.

Great layout man, love the sidings and accessories [tup] Keep us posted as you add on [:)]

Thank you for the info on the GG1. Some of the cars I have get close to the machines as it is so I wasn’t sure how much overlap the GG1 has on the curves. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to run a railraod of this size? Would a waybill type system function ok? Thanks for the suggestions!

I want to be sure you understand that I was talking about the postwar GG1s, not modern ones. I don’t know whether the one you are considering is shortened to the same degree as the old Lionel models. The length of my 2360 is 14 inches between coupler pulling faces.

Yes, I was thinking about the new Conventional Classics GG1. My understanding is that the Classics used postwar tooling. Thanks for the clarification.

Well, I grabbed a few sections of o27 curves and an o27 Lionel switch. The GG1 I own (18313) is 14"ish and likely from the same mold as the postwar ones. Here’s a shot of what it looks like:

Well that answer that question [tup]
