First Move

Who do you guys think will make the first move in MEGA- MERGERS?

  1. Norfolk Southern
  2. Union Pacific
  3. CSX
  4. BNSF
  5. KCS
  6. CN
  7. Canadian Pacific

CN. As the detective shows say, it has means and motive. It’s just waiting for opportunity. Which might come this fall if grain hauling is a disappointment. It could really give UP a run for the Mexico market if it better teamed up with KCS.

I myself pray for no more mergers.

I really expect CSX to fall into a crisis,… with UP and BNSF splitting it between them, and NS getting a few choice routes and some juicy trackage privies to act as “hush money” to keep them from objecting

I THINK THE RAILROADS ARE LIKE SPORTS TEAMS TRADING … THEY ALL HAVE HAD TALKS AND WAITING FOR THE FRIST ONE TO MAKE A MOVE. THHEN THEY WILL MATCHUP WITH THE BEST PLAYERS I MEAN THE BEST PARTER FOR THE COMPANY AND THE STOCK HOLDERS. MY PICK IS A TIE . UP OR BNSF WILL MAKE THE MOVE TO COME EAST. BEST PAIRING I SEE IS UP&CSX AND BNSF&NS. BUT KCS COULD MAKE A MOVE TO COME EAST ALSO …

The trouble often is–and I think this was mentioned in the July TRAINS cover story–that the best financial duos are not always the best route duos. CN and NS are both in pretty robust financial condition, yet NS works more with CP.

Whoever gets CSX is in for a headache. Their stock price has rallied lately, though, so either something’s already afoot or a lot of investors don’t share my low opinion of CSX as a stock investment (my brokerage house calls it a “Mature Cyclical,” meaning it has neither a steady revenue stream nor prospects of rapid growth).

I don’t thik any mergers would be allowed to take place by federal regulators except perhaps KSC to NS or CSX.

trackage rights on CN for NS in some areas…maybe… if this was to go down this way…but NS wouldnt get anything out of any of the csx system…go look at a map of the eastern half of the us… eveywhere csx goes…NS is thier too…the only thing NS might have to gain would be some secondary lines…but why bother in the end…when they have the lines they wanted when they split gonrail… they NS would have nothing to gain by taking anything off of csx…
but this is all just a pipe dream anyways…

SHIP CSX…I NEED MY PAYCHECK

I think the Pacific Electric will.

Virlon

save your ticket…the P.E. will rise again.

CN & CSX

I think KSC would be a much better “fit” for one of the Canadian railroads.

However, I agree, there have been too many mergers ! ! !

Enough is enough. [:(!]

i agree with antigates CSX might go the way of conrail

UP and CN will merge. The combined Union National(Canadian Pacific?[;)])will be so large that the respective governmental authorities will give up and let the combined company take over all the roads left in both countries. Before this final move, all Mexican roads will have been merged into KCS.

Ok, first off, STOP YELLING BIG BILLY!!!
Second, KCS because they are the much smaller road and will be easier to gobble up.

Just think CSX Engineer. Someday you will be working for the Union Pacific Railroad with all this crazy talk about a UPRR CSXT Merger. Allan.

What I was thinking of specifically was the Memphis/Cincinnati/Cleveland route, just in case UPever gets the south half of their system fluid

but then i don’t know anything

lol…i have been hearing talk of the UP CSX deal for 7+ years now…and it hasnt gone down yet…lol… also…i dont care whos name is on my paycheck…just as long as i still get one…and it clears the bank… the names may change…but the job is still the same…

I think Hunter Harrison might leave CN to take over Ward’s job. I can see CSX’s board of directors chucking Ward and paying through the nose in aquiring Harrison’s talents to fix the profit margain. Ideally, CSX would like to merge with CN but since the government agencies would cry foul, they will try seducing Harrison to the CSX side.

Most of what I read here leads me to believe that most Canadian (or Canadien[:P]) posters don’t think very highly of Mr. Harrison. Why do you think CSX would be interested in him? Or, are you just wishing he would leave CN?[}:)]

Well I’m going to have to say that either UP or KCS will make the next move in mergers. Well I should actually say that UP will make the next aquisition (spelling) as UP nomally does. UP has more aquisitions that any other railroad I know of. I seems to me that when a "merger is taking place w/ UP it seems to me that it’s a take over. On the other hand KCS, is relitivly small class one railroad, and a merger between KCS and another railroad like CSX for example will give KCS a real compeitive chance in the east maybe out weighing NS’ present compeitiveness against CSX.

I am going to have to say that if I were to see a merger that I wouldn’t mind seeing UP and CSX team up. That will be an interesting pair considering the fact that both of these railroads are complete opposites. However, I don’t know what it will do for competition, a merger such as this might violate the Anti Trust Laws and not allow for equal competition.

Sarah, Sweetheart, I’m going to have to disagree with you on this one. UP isn’t going to initiate the next round. It’s already got more than half of the interchange business from both CSX and NS, so merging with either one would cost it revenue.

BNSF, however, using that argument, would stand to gain by merging with either of the two eastern railroads. UP would get (and probably not be too happy with) the leftovers. The end result will probably be the same as you say–UP and CSX–but not the way you expected. AMG
