Here are 3 photos of my first rock attempts, making them… attaching and coloring them. I went with the washes of cheap acrylic paints. Maybe on the next ones I’ll try going for the more grayish tones and try the india ink wash to get down in the cracks a little better. So, how do you think these did… Ok?
Those are the best you ever did. They may not be the best you ever do. I would add a couple of black washes, with ink or mars black acrylics, to get the cracks. Make it a light wash, you can add more later. Do not add the washes evenly.
After that you can try dry brushing some white and maybe brown to ad texture. Remember, if you don’t like something you can paint over it and start again.
You also want to deal with the areas between the outcroppings. I might try a little darker brown and tannish ground foam. Then some trees or bushes, depending on the area.
Keep the photos coming, we are all learning together.
Thanks Jim and Art. I’m going to try a little india ink and alcohol next and then try and figure out the best way to get some ‘dirt’ and/or WS fine ground cover in between the rocks, since the surface is almost vertical. I’m thinking about brushing on some of the ‘dirt’ colored paint and whiles it’s wet maybe blowing the cover off a piece of paper. Doing a small area at the time so the paint doesn’t dry too quick. I’m sure glad to finally see some color on this layout. I’m really learning a lot with this layout and maybe… Lord willing… my next one will be better, though at age 64 this maybe my one and only… [:D]
You have the idea there. Paint with color or just glue and blow foam on it while wet. You can then vac or dust the rest. If you are careful with the brush you can do many colors in an area or textures.
At 64 you are a young guy, though I think I only have one more in me. Keep the pics coming, they inspire us all.
Well, I got this far with it. I’ll tell’ya… I’m soooo tired of looking at either blue foam or white paint I just had to pick a spot and do something with it…
Boy, you guys were holding out on me! This is the fun part! Actually getting to see color and grass and real looking stuff!! [:D]
It even makes your locomotives look better!
There’s still several things I need to do to this little scene but I’m learning a lot from this little 18" square area.
I know it’s not the greatest, but at least I feel like I’m getting somewhere with it. No wonder it takes a lifetime to get good at this. You have to learn so much and you make so many mistakes… you just have to do it again. And again… and again.
Looks like your on your way to some great looking scenery! On your next casting, try misting some A&I stain over the casting with a spray bottle. The stain will creep into the knooks and crannies creating a shadowing effect.
Whew! Bob, when I saw your name in the reply I thought, 'uh oh, I’ve got a master scenery builder here and he’s gonna rip me apart!" [:P]
I’ll give that a try and as a matter of fact, I was looking for a spray bottle tonight and couldn’t find a single one that gave out a decent mist and not a hard spray. Those things are hard to find!
Thanks for the suggestion, I have a hill next to this one that I’ll try that on.
Looking good. The whole world looks better when it looks like a world. You will learn even more little details and great scenery will get even better. I really learn a lot form watching all these great threads.
Nice job, Jason! As others, the only thing I would add is more shadows… either a base coat of black or some india ink washes… Either way, I love the work! Keep it up… hmmm time for me to work on my bridge pier dilemma…
