Fixing a LL 0-4-0

I have my first locomotive a LL 0-4-0 w/ tender and I was takeing the botom plate off of it to take out the draw bar and install a coupler. When I took the plate off the axel came off. All I though I had to do was slide it back in but no, the worm gear doesn’t make contact with the gear on the axel. How do I fix this?

Hmm, that is interesting… For starters, will the axles fit back into their respective places? If they wont, you may want to try to rotate the axle above the slots in the frame until the both fall into place. Im sorry, that aint much help to you. Could you give us more to work with?

This is a little late, but why are you trying to install a coupler between the locomotive and the tender? Aside from tank engines, steam locomotives can’t run without their tenders…

A LL 0-4-0 is best fixed with a large hammer![:-^]

You’re right, Lou. If you can’t fix it with a hammer, it’s beyond repair.

The axle does slip back into the lsot but the worm drive doesn’t even touch the gear.

It sounds to me like you are not getting the axle to sit properly in the slot, or you are missing a part.

I don’t think the Life Like 0-4-0 has one, but some engines use an idler gear between the motor and axle gears.

Does your engine look like this one?

I have one of those. It was my first steam engine that ran with any real smoothness, believe it or not. And believe it or not, except for the traction tires, it’s one sturdy little engine!

When you’re putting the axle back in, are you making sure the contact wipers are going behind the wheels? Having the wipers on top of the wheels would cause poor seating. The motor is clipped in tight, so I doubt that it’s the problem.

Did you loosen the screw holding the motor down by mistake? If so you might as well remove the boiler and clean it, lube it and reattach it.

I had an old Mantua one that I took apart to paint, and it did the same thing.
