Flangers in use on the Durango & Silverton

Most folks who frequent the GR forums know I work for a Denver TV station, but I figured this was much more apropos for the Trains forum.

Our mountain bureau crew has been traveling southwest Colorado the past week doing stories about the large amount of snowfall they’ve received. It seems the Durango & Silverton is battling the drifts the old fashioned way…

Great video K, thanks for posting!

Heavy Snow Puts Damper on Durango Railroad - Feb. 16, 2010, 6:29 p.m. MT

After a 15-second commercial, it’s 2 mins. 58 secs. long. The train is the exclusive subject from about 0:47 to 2:32. The loco is 482 (I don’t know the type from just that info, though); the flanger is stencilled “BLT 1885” or similar, but I didn’t see or recognize its reporting ‘number’ anyplace (a lot of the D&RG narrow gauge work or M-O-W equipment was identified by 2 letters, usually starting with ‘O’, as in “OZ”, which I just made up for an example). The primary focus of the portion of this video on the flanger is on its side wings, which were being used to push the snow back; there was no mention of the cutting heads below and between the rail heads to open up the ‘flangeway’ area. Still, it was neat to see. Thanks for sharing !

Nicely done video. Thanks for posting that. Does anyone know if the D and S runs on a regular schedule all winter or if they just run specials? I looked at their website and it wasn’t clear to me. I had always assumed that they were closed for the winter, given the harsh weather. Surprise!

She’s a K-36 Mikado.

I believe the D&S owns the flanger OF, so I’m assuming that’s what they’re using.

Hi, Chris - Thanks

While you were posting, I was just finding other sites that indicate that the flanger is indeed the OF - see Denver & Rio Grande Western flangers at -
