Fleischmann ad from January 1959 with Blaze Starr

Is this the ad that got banned in Canada?

There was a similar ad that had the girl in a swimsuit as I recall…?? Might be that was the “problem” one.

She appeared in several on the back cover in '57 and/or '58. As a teenager I had literaly just seen her in Philadelphia at what we called the Teddyy Roosevelt Opera Club.

Don’t know but this one should have been. Now that I think about it, this looks like my childhood friend down the street’s mom. http://www.trfindley.com/fltrainads/19580183.html

The first one I hadn’t seen before. The second one, I do have the issue in which that appears. Both are relatively mild compared to other ads from the era that appeared in other magazines that were NOT “Men’s” magazines. Just recently I saw a link to some classics - some of them were better suited to be in Playboy than used as an ad in a general magazine, but there they were.

Hmm. Must resist the temptation to comment on strippers promoting “HO”…[8D]

Well the ad says “truly complete” and she sure was that. “More and better of everything” seems accurate as well. This is truth in advertising! Rarely have I seen so magnificently scenicked a layout …

Interestingly according to the Wikipedia entry for Blaze Starr after she retired as an entertainer she became a jeweler and craftsman – so in a sense she has more in common with model railroaders now than she did back then.

The second ad linked to, the one with Carrie Abbott (who, alas, at the time had no Phone Number according to the ad) - can’t seem to find info about her nor her Night Club act (only in America’s best night clubs, again according to the ad). Searching brings up a lot about a motivation speaker named Carrie Abbott, but unless Ms Abbott has found the fountain of youth it’s not the same person.

And to show that my brain is really fried, I focused more on the Vollmer Footbridge, as I need a footbridge of that style - and it’s still offered by Vollmer it seems, and using a on-line inflation calculator the 1958 price of $6.95 is equal to $50.99 in 2009 - the Walthers on-line Catalog prices is 46.99, so it’s actually cheaper now than back in the good ol’ days!
