A couple sources have told me that Floquil’s RR64 Maroon is a dead on match for freshly painted Chicago Great Western Maroon. Problem is it no longer available. I was wondering if anyone had any info on this color and/or a good substitute or paint mix. I have been told RR64 was a darker maroon with a certain “purple” quality to it. Supposedly, it was prototyped after British Rail Maroon. However British Rail actually had 2 maroons. So if this fact is true, then which one?
Here’s one version (lighter Wisconsin Central-esque version)
I was wondering if anyone was familiar or has previously used this this color and would be able to supply any more info and/or confirm if it seems like a color close to one of the above photo links. Thanks for all the help.
Are you sure it’s no longer made? Or is that was your LHS said? Walthers shows it ‘out of stock’ with no refill date, but has not dropped it from their on-line catalog. Maybe sending and email to Floquil-RPM will get you the real information - http://www.testors.com/contact_us
It is no longer produced. It apparently was discontinued prior to Testors’ takeover of Floquil. I contacted Testors directly about a month ago to see if they could supply me with a formula to reproduce the color with currently available products. The young lady who helped me said she searched the info they had on hand and could only find mention of its existence at one point in time. She actually asked me if I had sample of it for them to see. Unfortunately, not only do I lack a sample, I’ve never seen this color. What I do know (other than what is mentioned in my previous post) is after a coating of Floquil’s crystal coat, it (RR64) matches a 1955 CGW Maroon Paint chip sample dead on.
Floquil was based in NY and Testors is based in IL, so I have a feeling alot of their archived info could have been junked after the takeover so they wouldn’t have to move it to Rockford. Dunno, maybe I just didn’t talk to the right person. But what I do know is whether you email or call floquil/testors, you get this person and thats basically as far the call goes. Maybe somebody in the some other position has access to more info or knows more info. Maybe not. Anyone got any ideas?
I just looked on walthers online for the heck of it… to see if had that little “find it” link. And I can’t find the Floquil RR64 Maroon listing, can you post that link? thanks
