While working on a new structure, I realized that I was out of Floquil’s Depot Buff. So I headed down to my local hobby shop to pick up a fresh bottle. I was shocked to see that the price had jumped from $3.25 to $4.50 a bottle.
(I thought $3.25 was expensive enough). Anyway, when I ask the hobby shop owner why the price shot up so much, he said that he was also being charged the mark up, and needed to pass his cost on to his customers. Wow! at these prices, it has become more expensive to paint a craftsmen kit then the cost of the kit itself!!!
Have any of you had any luck with other types of paint?
I remember when Floquil topped a $1.00 a bottle - that was the year Custer was a plebe at the Point - and it’s been sky high ever since.
I was always going to quit smoking when Cigarettes passed $2.00 a pack - then when it passed $2.50 a pack - then $3.00 a pack. I think it was over $4.00 a pack when I spent 27 days in the hospital (I was in there two years ago.) Boy, that got me to quit - I figgur’d if I could go 27 days without smoking there sure wasn’t too much reason to pick up that thread in my life.
I haven’t bought any in awhile but if Floquil has gone to $4.50 a bottle guess I’ll just have to pay the freight.
Easy answer: Floquil paint uses petroleum distillates - the price of oil is way up. [:(]
Besides, back in the late Fifties, Floquil was 50 cents a bottle. If you figure in inflation, it’s really a bunch cheaper, even at $4.50 a bottle, than it used to be “back in the day”.
Heh. I rememeber Gasoline at .30 cents a gallon with cars that needed less than 10 dollars to fill. Just had to be careful to keep Leaded gas in the right cars. Ah those were the days.
I would not worry about the cost of paint. Considering one undecorated RTR car costs like 30.00 I would not worry about that 4.50 bottle of paint.
What ? prices increasing ? ? what would be the reason ? better product, increased size, oh, maybe “because” is the reason> Is anything else going to go up in price ? ?

Mine carries Badger model flex acrilic which smells like baby poop to me.(and the colors stink too)

You can thank the Environmental Protection Agency for some of the price increases because of the outlawing of lead based paints and some of the solvents that were used in paint formulas of years past.
When cleaning out some old boxes of stuff at my parents house I did find some old Testors paint with 19 (yes 19) cent price tags on them.
Wouldn’t it be neat if we could get the Back to the Future car and go back in time a couple of decades to get some paint, balsa, Blue Box kits, brass etc? Of course we’d quickly learn that some things weren’t as great as we remember them as. Oh well.
