Floquil Paint to Military Color Conversion Chart V1.1

Hey Everyone,

I decided to move this post to it’s own thread so it will be easier to find then trying to unearth it from a series of pages in the other topic.

Can’t claim these colors are “dead ringers” an exact match but they should get you pretty close. There are many more possible paint matches out there with different finishes available. It’s just a matter of taking the time to discover more. I will try to keep this up to date the best I can. This is the first version and hopefully will help alleviate some stress of trying to find an upgrade path to the right colors.

Revell had a conversion chart put together by Testors. In there you will discover some Floquil colors matched to Model Master colors if you read from right to left. Very handy to have.

Chris,

Thank You,very thoughtful of you to do that…

Chris: You are doing great work on this master correlation schedule (fancy words, but accurate). One thing I have been using for a while is the Rustoleum (also RPM’s products) spray paints for some colors, such as metal primer red for boxcar or oxide red and dark gray primer for a sort of grimy black, a la Pollyscale. Unfortunately, I have also found that the Krylon plastic fusion spray, which has some notable colors, is better on flat surfaces. It tends to not cover edges as well, and is relatively thin. I tried using a bit of sprayed Fusion paint ( sprayed into a small disposable bottle) and found that it is a poor touch up paint when used with a brush. Rustoleum or Walmart cheep light gray primer appears to be of smaller pigment particulate size and works for a general primer on bare plastic. I would recommend a primer coat under the lighter Tamiya colors, to enliven the yellows, etc. Cedarwoodron

Believe it or not, it was pretty fun to put this together, although my eyes started going cross after the 24th color. LOL

Thanks for that mention cedarwoodron. I’ll take a look into them. I have in the past bottled spray paints by using a rag over the can and the bottle and squirting the entire contents of the can into the bottle. Makes good for airbrushing later. Of course follow all paint safety procedures when you do that. (respirator and latex gloves) it gets messy.

Chris, Thanks, chart and info very helpful.

Actually Chris, you are doing a greater service to those of us in the model railroad community who are still “hands-on” than you realize. One of the things that might make our hobby stronger is to increase the level of conversation with similar hobbyists- the fine scale modelers who focus on military, auto, air/space craft, and fantasy figures- techniques that are used elsewhere and paint solutions that are employed elsewhere might well translate into applications for railroads. My sincere thanks. Cedarwoodron

Cedarwoodron,

I’m glad to contribute something of value. I can’t vouch for perfection on the majority of these colors but hopefully it will help. I too custom paint models so a list like this I felt shouldn’t be kept on my desktop for only me.

Just to reassure you that I didn’t just throw darts at color swatches, and “guess” these colors. I cross referenced online various photos, bottoms of bottles, color swatches, spoons painted by other modelers, recommendations of other modelers, and other conversion charts, to give you my best educated pick. If you guys have or made a color match that you feel is closer then any of the ones listed, please share!

You guys are some of the nicest people on any forum I met [bow]

Added a few more colors for the Milwaukee Road, Erie Lackawanna, SSI-ITEL, UPS, and a few extras. Updated to Version 1.1

Happy Thurs everyone!

I’d depleted my stock of EL Gray, so I went looking for this chart to find a stand-in. Figured it could use a kick back up to the top of the thread list after 11 months. It’s a handy list.

Chris,

Any suggestions for a good spray paint substitution for Tuscan Red and Boxcar Red?

Thanks,

Andy
