Floquil Paints

Is there a kit available for the railroad colors? Could some of you list the popular colors that you use on structures.

I’d go with the Polly Scale acrylics for structures. I use the Floquil enamels more for locos and rolling stock.(things that get handled more)[2c] I beleive the colors are the same for both lines.

I don’t believe that Floquil has a “Railroad Colors” kit, but the common ones for me would be:

Engine Black

Grimy Black

Graphite (usually for steamer smokeboxes, but I’ve found a new source for smokebox color - see thread entitled, “Smokebox Coloring for Steamers”.)

Boxcar Red

ATSF Mineral Red

Tuscan Red

Dark Green

Reefer Grey

Reefer Yellow

Foundation

For weathering, there’s

Grime

Mud

Dust (though that’s plentiful enough without buying any,)

Rust

Rail Brown

Roof Brown (for rails - Rail Brown is for darker rust color)

That’ll do for most rolling stock projects.

Thanks for the info. That will get me started.

Be sure to get the colours for your road such as if modeling the Santa Fe get the Santa Fe Blue and the SF Yellow and SF Red. The others listed above will do fine. I use the lacquer based Floquil for all painting.

In an airbrush cut the paint with Dio-Sol about 40%. After the paint dries then overcoat with Crystal Coat then your decals. Finish up with Flat Finish or Testors Dull Cote. Plain old paint store lacquer thinner can be used for cleaning the airbrush and paint brushes.
