Flyer # 35 Brakeman

An interesting item offered from 1950-52

Originals are a little pricey, so I picked up a couple of reproductions from Port Lines for $8.95 each (item 2711)

The figure is about 1 1/4 inches tall. A little large for S but perhaps a concession to make the figure easier for children to handle. I think he’d look pretty good hanging off of an 0-8-0 or GP-7 during switching.

I have an original one of those that I bought years ago, and I never knew who made him. Thanks for identifying him as a Flyer product.

As you say, though, he’s very large for S scale, so I have him hanging off one of my Lionel cabooses. He’s still oversized there, too, but it’s less obvious.

His real problem is that it’s hard to get him to hang in a straight position on anything. Just like the one on your Flyer caboose, he generally looks like he’s playing chicken with oncoming trains.

Every once in a while it pays to stop at a garage sale. About two years ago I stopped at one as I was passing through a small town on my way to somewhere else and I spotted this box.

I turned it on its side and read:

I opened it expecting it to be empty because that is what usually happens and I saw:

I held my breath, paid the price, and drove home a happy man.

There are still some wonderful finds to be made out there.
