In his book on EMD locomotives, Brian Solomon mentions that the Maine Central Flying Yankee streamliner is undergoing restoration and those restoring it want to bring it back to running condition. Solomon mentioned that the original Winton 201A was considered, but according to Solomon, that option wasn’t considered feasible. So if this early streamliner is ever fully restored to operating condition, their options are either to heavily rebuild and overhaul the Winton with replacement parts, which will likely have to be custom made since winton spares are probably hard to come by, use a 567 or 645 in place of the Winton, or use a non-EMD engine.
FWIW if i WERE restoring I would go with a 645 to guarantee parts for the far future. Wintons? bad idea.
Suggest you visit a great site www.flyingyankee.com for the most up to date information and data available on this restoration effort. Unfortunately the Mark Twain Zephyr is going to end up as a static display in a flood-prone zone in Granite City, Mo. Too late, we here in Creston, Iowa were going to start working on aquiring the Mark Twain to restore it to operation and run it on the “Main Line” where it once ran many decades ago.
