Foam Carving

Has anyone ever tried this? I couldn’t believe how easy it was, and fairly fast too. Def going to use this in the future. Couple pics are below.

I started doing that many years ago after watching it being done on a Kalmbach video. I learned at the same time to have the Shop-Vac handy as the mess generated was unbelievable.[(-D] I’ve used both beaded and extruded foam. The extruded type is a bit less messy [8D] while the beaded type tends to come out in chunks and little beads that stick to just about everything including the cat.[:'(][xx(]

You do a better job, but I have tried it. I also have done random rock walls. YES IT IS EASY, though your artistry looks good. What did you use for darkening the joints? I have tried acrylic washes and india ink. I have also used a variety of colors when I model random rock wall. Thanks for the thread.

Arthill, thank you for your kind words, and your rocks look great! I used an airbrush with flat gray with a little black mixed in. Once it dried I gave it another coat to touch up anywhere that you could see pink foam shining through. I then gave it a wash of ink & alcohol.

PJ and Art. What tool’s did you use for carving your masterpieces? They look great.

Batman. For carving rock walls like the stone wall on the posted pic, I use a #11 xacto blade. For mountains like tKimm’s Kanyon or Dayton’s Bluff as seen in the sunset pics I use a serrated steak knife and a brass brush. I tried all the cool tools but the steak knife is my favorite. By the way, the cliff in the rockwall pic is plaster castings as well as some carved foam.

Exactly what I used.

Thanks guys.

Those are my favourite tools as well. I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing a better one.[:)]

Very nice work.

Have seen some similar work done using a ball point pen to scribe the lines. Have heard that a change in formula in one of the extruded foams makes it work not quite as well. The other still scribes well with a pen. Can’t remember whether it was pink or blue that changed. Most of my foam came from projects before the change.

Have fun,

Richard

Great call Richard. Never thought of using a ball point pen. Come to think of it I bet it will be more accurate when tracing lines vs a pencil. That is why I love this forum!
