I am wondering if anyone has used foam core board instead of cork under yards, etc. It is about the same height as cork and is cheaper, does it hold up under yards. I don’t plan to use it under the mainline track as there would be quite a bit of waste.
yes i use it on my 2 by 12 long yard.only paid a dollar a piece for each section.i used full strength elmers white glue and after an hour or so i laid the track down.you will not have to worry about it coming up.it will not warp even after ballasting the track.i painted mine black before i laid the track.sometimes you can buy the black foamboard but i used the white which was the only color available at the time.terry…
As long as you’re absolutely certain there is no possible chance of anything or anyone ever mashing down on the foam core board, it should be okay to use under your yard tracks.
I haven’t tried foam core, but on my last layout all of my roadbed was hand cut out of 1/2" wide pink board. I cut the material into 1.5" wide strips (the width of a 1x2) and laid it like cork. Once the track was in, I beveled the edges and cut in drainage ditches with a utility knife. The system worked great, and was dirt cheap. For modeling the Midwest, where the grade is usually much higher than the surrounding croplands, it’s a great way to build up your ROW cheaply and effectively.
