When laying an 8x4 extruded foam sheet on your bench work what is the best thickness to use
Most H0ers use the 2 inch thickness, N scaler often use 1 inch. Where are you finding 4x8 pink or blue extruded foam, all I’ve ever seen is 2x8?

I’d recommend 2" regardless of scale. It is stronger, is quite solid on 2’ centers even stronger on 16". I would also recommend a solid facia along any sides that are exposed to traffic, it will dent. The 2" gives you opportunity to have more below grade scenery as well as the strength.

The Lowes I go to has the blue foam in an 8x4
Lowe’s has 3/4" & 1/2" thick in 4 x 8 sheets. I used these layered to build a 2" thickness. This makes it real easy to remove sections to create varied elevations and contours.
