Folkston, GA

Anybody being their & can give some details of this location. I am considering a 1,000 mile R/T car ride to get their & want some advice from railfans who have been their would it be worth the drive? Some of my questions are:

Do you see considerable interlocking action their?
Do you see trains moving at a fast pace?
Is it single, double or triple tracked.

Any info you have would be greatly appreciated. [:D]

they have a nice platform and their are many resurants near by they installed a bathroom last june when it is sunny and hot you have to move to the other side you see about 60 trains a day ( my all time was 45 ) it is double track and I heared that their making it triple track from the St.Marys river to Folkston but that was 2 years ago

when you go HAVE FUN because when I go I have fun

Great spot- stopped there for an hour several weeks ago- 5 trains in that time. I’m stopping again soon!

As mentioned earlier, you’ve got two sets of double tracks converging in town (Nahunta and Jesup Subs) into one set of double “speedways” Speed limit through town is 50mph. Average train number in daylight hours is about 30-40. Beware that track 2 can sometimes turn into a northbound parking lot if the yard in Waycross gets backed up. (once watched a northbound sit in town for 4 hours waiting to leave) If you’re looking for speed, head over into FL to Hilliard. 79mph for Amtraks and 70mph for intermodals. Much more spacious than Folkston along with longer sunlight “windows” w/no shadows. Tangent, undulating track as far as the eye can see!

OK in your opinion though is it worth a 1,000 miles R/T auto trip to see it? [:D]

Is it worth thought a 500 mile each way auto trip to see it? [:D]

Yes but in your opinion is it worth a 500 mile each way auto trip to see it? [:D]

Maybe you were planning on doing this anyway but, you might want to look at other spots along the way. I don’t know which way you are coming from, but I would bet that there are other hotspots along your route that you could visit also.

No thanks this would be JUST to see the that spot. To my knowledge their are no other hotspots on my route to Folkston. [:D]

In my opinion Folkston would be worth a 500 mile trip IF you could stay at least 24 to 48 hours to see plenty of action. I have been there once and loved it. I only got to stay there for about eight hours but I saw about fifteen trains if I remember right. There are plenty of accomadations nearby as others have pointed out.

George

Thanks for your opinion. I was thinking of going overnite & spending about 8 hours total watching the trains. [:D]

Where are you coming from, and when would you be going? I’ve never been to the train-watching platform in Folkston, but can tell you from much experience that south Georgia in the dead of summer (June thru late September) can be muggy and miserable. The platform may have overhead fans, which would also help with the hordes of mosquitoes in that part of the world.

If you can drive a few miles, CSX has a large hump yard at Waycross (I’m guessing 60-70 miles from Folkston) and a large flat yard at Baldwin, FL (west of Jacksonville) that you can see from I-10.

If you go, please give us a report.

Yes, I want to second that , do take some mosquito repellant with you it you go.

George

oh yeah if you go to Waycross there is a scrap yard[:(]

and once I have seen one sit for about 3 hours when ever the said what the signal was they sounded bored and once they said ‘’ It feels like a day sitting here instead of 3 hours’’ and there was alot of trains after that I said that they were getting ready to bang their heads aganist the rail.

and spbed where do you live it’s about 200 for me

I’ll let you be the judge. The trip report I compiled below was done on 3/18-3/21/04.
112 trains seen mostly in daylight. If you go, be prepared to see lots of CSX GEs’ with an occasional “surprise” here and there.
