Thanks to everyone who replied to my post. I really appreciate all of the helpful suggestions. To answer some of the questions that were asked in the replies, I have a DCC system. The layout is a 5 x 9 ft modified figure eight with spurs and a side yard with four tracks in it. I’m beginning to understand just how the little things can made running the layout smoothly very frustrating, i.e. just the slightest disconnect from the track and wheels on a short base loco, solder joints that look fine but aren’t, a height discrepency in the track, etc. You’ve given plenty to check out in the next few weeks. I suspect that one of the problems is a disconnect of the wheels from the track at certain spots. That could account for having fewer problems with the larger loco with six wheel trucks front and rear vs. four wheel truck with shorter wheelbase. Much appreicate you help.
