OK I think I am going to take the Gibbons plunge. The internet says there is a motel their called the “Country Inn”. Do you know anything about it ot have any recommendations for a motel their. My plan is to arrive Omaha midday your time & proceed immediately to Gibbon. Stay at Gibbon 2 days then back to Omaha & fly back home the next afternoon. Do you also know any good spots in Omaha to train watch for a few hours until I have to leave for my trip back? Thanks in advance for any info you can furnish me. [:o)] [:o)]
spbed, when you are in the Omaha area I strongly suggest you drive up to Fremont where the UP and BNSF have main lines and LOTS of traffic (especially on UP). I was there about a year back and thouroughly enjoyed my visit.
Thank U for the suggestion. I had all intentions of going there also as when I used to route my company traffic I used to use the Fremont interchange between UPRR & CNWRR. Know anything about Gibbon? [8D]
Can you assist me ?
Omaha is not as good as the Gibbon area. The Amtrak Depot is sure a Very good bet because that’s where the UP and the BNSF run side by side for at least 3 Miles.
On a good day you can catch at least 5 to 10 UP’s and if your very luck enough you will catch somewhere’s like mabe 5 BNSF Trains. That’s if your lucky. One of the Best Places in Nebraska to to catch real good action would be the UP’s Grand Island to O’Fallons line. The line that runs just south of Gibbon has alot of Trains too.
On the BNSF I strongly suggest the BNSF Lincoln area,Alliance area,& BNSF’s Crawford Hill. There are some very nice Photo areas up in the sand hills just northwest of Grand Island.
Just make sure you bring plenty of Film & a Video camera to record all the action because you won’t be going home empty handed.
I realy don’t know much about the Motel’s out there but there isn’t any problem checking them out though.
Have fun!

Thank you for all that info. I am really only flying into Omaha. From there I will proceed immediately westward to Gibbon. So my 1st question is do you know if there are any motels like a Hoilday Inn or Motel 6 or something like that in Gibbon? I found on the internet a place named Continental Inn in Gibbon do you know anything about it? All those other things you mention I will try to catch what you suggested which I appreciate greatly. My 1st thrust though is Gibbon then I will try my best to allocate time to see what you mentioned as well as another poster. I have a dig camera + a camcorder so I will be well armed in the pix department. The more you tell me the more pumped you get me [:o)][:D][:)][:o)][8D]

OK I booked the flights. I arrive 05/09 & depart 05/13. You got me so hopped up that I added 1 more day to the trip so I will have time to see Fremont/Lincoln & Omaha besides Gibbons. Thanks for your assistance [:D] [:)]
BTW have you yourself ever been in Gibbon? [:D][:o)][8D]

Gibbon itself is not a good place to stay. Try Grand Island as there a lot of good motels there and it’s only a short drive from there to Gibbon Jct which is east of Gibbon itself just a couple of miles. Lots of action is guaranteed. Paul
I agree. Grand Island would be a much better place! There are alot of very nice places to eat there too.[:p].

Oh by the way! You do must have to go to Grand Island,You’ll just love what you will see. The BNSF over the UP,or is that the UP under the BNSF[:D][8D].

BNSF crosses the UP on the east side of town. This is BNSF’s main coal route from the Powder River Basin to points south and east of Kansas City. It goes through Lincoln where Mookie lives. If you go from Omaha via Fremont, use US 30 west of Fremont and you will follow UP’s main all the way to Grand Island and Gibbon and even on to Pine Bluff, Wyoming. May will be a good month. Have fun. Paul

You sure got that right!

Thank U 4 the suggestion. Any city or place where you can both UPRR & BNSF together is a place I want to be. My plan is actually at 1st to stay at Kearney which according to the AAA books has plenty of motels and is closer to Gibbon then G. Island. Once I leave Gibbon I will go to G. Island on my way to the Fremont. Thank U again as I would have missed this if not for your suggestion which I greatly appreciate
Do you know if Lincoln is only a BNSF spot or does the UPRR also go thru? [:p][:)][:D]

Actually I am going to do your plan in reverse. From the airport straight to Gibbon. From there I saw Rte 30 & will take me thru G/Island & Fremont back to the Omaha. Thanks again I am really hopped up & cannot wait to see the action at all these places. [8D][:p][:o)]

For a $118.00 RT fare + a couple days meals & motels + a rental car it sounds like a terrific investment to me from what you & PwdOpd have posted. I am already pumped up to like the nth degree about it. It seems something akin to how I felt before the 1st time I ever hit Daggett CA which turned out to way beyond my expectations. I am sure this will also be far more then what I imagine based on yours & PwdOpd postings. [:D][:D][:o)][:o)]
Is Lincoln only a BNSF town[?][?][?]

I see you live only a little north of Omaha. I could arrange to spend my last nite in Neb in your town & meet you for dinner if you like? [:D][:p][8D][:p]

Lincoln is primarily BNSF and has just a smidge of UP. They do some local switching and that’s about all.
Can’t believe you are going to be that close to North Platte and won’t stop there to see the UP. Stayed in Gibbon one night for a week - just a spot in the road. Had an egg/chicken plant there.
I, personally, would start in North Platte then hit Kearney and Grand Island a little and end up in Omaha. UP/BNSF - a train is a train - and the viewing would be the best from those towns. North Platte actually has places for viewing - Grand Island, Kearney will be hunt and peck. And during the week, Lincoln is pretty commercial for good viewing.
Both Willy2 and I have some good spots, but unless you live here, or have time to spend here, you will spend most of your time hunting and pecking to get a good spot.
If you ask Brother Carl real nicely - he was here just a year ago and followed the UP western route. Maybe he will give you some tips.
