For everything there is a prototype - even toy train tunnels! Here is a picture of a tunnel on one of the old railroads in Costa Rica. It goes right through that bump of a mountain - just like the accompanying pic of the toy train tunnel. Why they didn’t go around that hill, I don’t know - but there it is - there is a prototype for just about anything! I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a river to the left. And that the mountain keeps going on the right.

You might be right about the river. Yes, your post takes the cake for the world’s goofiest tunnel! Was that made for a movie set or something?
It might be made to protect passing trains from rock slides. Since half the wall is missing on the right side.
Whadd’ya mean the pole doesn’t go there? I got the print and it says fifty feet north of the main track… that IS north, ain’t it?

I’ve seen a picture of Ed’s tunnel, looking from the other direction, with the story behind it. I’ll be darned if I can find it again.
I think it had something to do with daylighting?

Yeah. The STORY is that the crew got enthusiastic working on the floor of the tunnel, leading to unintentional daylighting. I dunno.
