For those interested in operation of classic steam

Hey guys
I came across a book at Borders that you may find interesting. It was first published in 1899.“Called Classic American Locomotives” It explains the operation and repair of almost every nut and bolt. Even tells how the fireman should stoke and maintain his fire. About 700 pages by Charles Mc Shane. Published by “the Lyons Press” For $22.95
If this is old news please disregard.
Have a good day

Lee,

Thanks for the info. I’ll have to check that out.

My cousin picked up for me a book called American Locomotives - An Engineering History, 1830-1880 (John H. White, Jr./The Johns Hopkins University Press). I’ve only glanced through it so far but it seems like it’s very similar to the book you are recommending, Lee. Not only does it get into individual locomotives but also the various parts and processes making up a locomotive.

Also “The Steam Locomotive in America” by Alfred W. Bruce. It’s subtitled “Its development in the Twentieth Century”. It describes and discusses just about every part (and the pros and cons of different versions) on a modern (not early) steam engine. And more.

When I got this book, I read it cover to cover like a novel.
