Former Amtrak unit in AZ

I ran into this photo on Railpictures.com and I have a question

http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=99324

Last year in Portland I was able to see the the yard and roundhouse where SP 4449 and SP&S 700 are stored. There was also a Amtrak F40PH there that had an article about it in Trains.

Is this the same unit? I can’t remember the old Amtrack road number.

No, not the same. The unit in Portland is the 231, owned by Chris Fussell. He is also a volunteer wiuth the 4449 team.
The GCRR unit is one of 3 purchased by GCRR about the same time, and the GCRR assisted Chris with the purchase and getting the unit to Portland.

Learn to spell Amtrak

Gee, sorry. Don’t post if you don’t like my spelling.

I see you live in SLC. I will be there in late May. Can you advise me how to get to the juncture point where the former WPRR line from the bay area merges into the LASLC tracks from Vegas? Thanks in advance[:D][:p]

This is a hip shoot (I’m working from memory and an aerial photo). The WP tracks follow Interstate 80 east/west (which is at about 9th South Street). Most of the north/south tracks are on the west side of Interstate 15 (which runs North/South).

Here is what I’m thinking you’re after. The location where the WP tracks turn north is at about South Temple Street and 700 West Street. The then turn north and run up to the UP’s intermodal yard in North Salt lake. You could take any of the surface streets in that area to get there. There is another yard in South Salt Lake located at about 2400 South Street and 700 West Street. You can pretty much drive up and down 700 West to see most of what is available in SLC. If you’re in town and have a spare afternoon, drive to Ogden (40 miles north) and see the Union Station Museum and State Railroad Museum (they are at the same location). Here’s the link: http://www.theunionstation.org/

Anyway, if this isn’t what you were hoping for, let me know. You can also check out www.mapquest.com to get a feel for the location of the addresses i gave you.

Actually, wes spelled it both ways in the original post. Probably just a natural reflex, since “trak” is a mis-spelling while “track” would be a correct spelling, except in the case of “Amtrak”. [sigh]

Love the mis-matched numberboards on that engine!

You forgot the period at the end of your incomplete sentence.

Picky, picky, picky.

Kalmbach Home For The Pedantic has rooms waiting. Some even have padded walls and complementary robes with extra long sleeves and fasteners! The wards for the grammar deprived and failed spelling are filling up fast!

Thanks guys! [;)]

Is there any way to tell which trains have FPA4s for power, and which ones have F40PHs? I would hate to go there expecting to ride behind ALCO designed units and getting stuck with an F40[:(!].

[;)] Nice comeback zardoz, nice comeback indeed! Somehow the old saying “People who livfe in glass houses should not throw stones” really fits here, doesn’t it?

I like that new paint scheme on the ex-Amtrak (a.k.a. Amtrack) unit!

However, I’d rather see it in phase 3 on the front of a Texas Eagle in Poplar Bluff, MO!

I personally think they should have painted the F40’s in the same dark green scheme as the Alco units, which look really nice and very classy.
