Former PRR Stone Bridge in Johnstown, PA getting renovated.

For those interest in the famous former PRR (current NS) Stone Bridge in Johnstown, PA click on the link below.

A group plans to renovate the bridge with LED lights, and are close to their $1.2 million goal. I wonder if they will keep the PPR name on the bridge; it is located over the route 56 underpass.

Yes, that stone arch bridge is a famous one…Enlarged {wider}, some years ago to support 4 tracks, but it certainly was a center point in the 1889 flood.

1.2 mil. dollars to renovate and install lights…Seems like quite a bit of money to install lights…Wonder what else is planned for renovation.

Bridge is not too far from my original home area…

I wonder if the group has an agreement with the owner of the bridge - presumably Norfolk Southern now - to do that ?

What are they going to do to it that the railroad hasn’t already or won’t be doing anyway as part of routine maintenance ? Maybe they’ll just clean up the mortar and concrete and repaint it and install the lights ? I wonder how NS will feel about an outside group doing that - glad that it’s their money instead, or a little embarrassed that such a group felt the need to do something that the railroad isn’t ?

…It {the stone arch bridge}, is near tourist attractions in the area…and of course it’s part of the flood story of Johnstown…it’s near the 1889 Flood museum and the Incline Plane…The “point bridge” can be seen from the observation deck up at the upper level of the Incline Plane attraction.

But, I’m sure they wouldn’t attempt to touch it without N S’s blessings…Seems they {especially them}, are rather strict about their ROW…And of course there is nothing wrong about that.

That area is called the "point’ as the two water ways come together at that location…and form a sharp point Litterly…You can walk out on it as it’s been paved some years ago and really have a good look at the arch bridge, which is just below it…

Oh they have been planning this for about a year and they would not have gone through with it, if NS did not comply. I never thought they would actually get to this point so fast.

Here is a link to what they are hoping to do to the bridge.
