Former Rock Island swing bridge gets new life as trail

They did something similar to the old NS bridge across the Tennessee Bridge at Florence, Alabama. I have walked on this one.

Is this still a swing bridge? If not, how do they handle river traffic?

2.3 million dollars to refurbish a bridge for another trail. What a waste of money that could be used for more important things. This trail business is getting out of hand.

Actually, Dakota county is on the west side, Washington county on the east.

I would also like an answer to Landon’s question, and I am inclined to agree with Richard’s comment !

The swing portion was removed. The trail does not go across the river and is a dead end in the middle of the river. It was a way to preserve what little portion of the bridge that they could. There is no impediment to river traffic whatsoever. The only remaining part of the original bridge is the piers and the last span at the end of the bridge in the middle of the river. The spans closest to the shore are new.

Thank You ! Bryan, for clarifying the details for Landon and me. Very well done !! Appreciate it !
