Well, another ex-ATSF SD45-2, now SD40-2R, is in new BNSF paint. BNSF 7951 still looks like a SD45-2 and retains it’s original rear fans.
That’s not a bad look, but for whatever reason, the high-nose SD9 (#6136) I saw a few years ago in a westbound consist leaving Willmar looked best to me in the pumpkin scheme. It had the original BNSF pumpkin livery and logo, and it’s the only locomotive make I thought looked really sharp in BNSF colors. “BNSF” and “Burlington Northern Santa Fe” seems like someone settling for a name because they couldn’t come up with a better idea. They were down to the last hour of some deadline and gave-up and said, “Ahhh heck - just call us Burlington Northern Santa Fe! I GIVE UP!”
They got 4 of those SD40-2Rs, the latest one being 7953.
What is the HP rating of these engines?
I have to admit that at first I did not like the current BNSF “GLEEM TOOTHPASTE” logo, but it’s now starting to grow on me.
This old girl looks sharp! [8D][tup]
It looks like ATSF employees maintained their locomotives well if they have lasted for so many years.
Colours look real good aka Great Northern, loco type looks real good, logo… not so good.
That’s one sharp looking locomotive.
At least BNSF’s name is better than CSX’s (which apparently really was a case where they couldn’t come up with a name and literally gave up). I’d rather they called in Burlington Northern Santa Fe - while a mouthful, it respects the railroad’s heritage.
That locomotive looks great - why don’t they send it out to Virginia.
I’ll agree with you there - few outside the CSX offices know that it means “Chessie Seaboard Times Ten” or whatever.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again… Canted red rectangle!!! [swg]
