Forney

Can anyone tell me if Forneys are available in HO and DCC equiped? And if so, who makes them?

Train and Trooper http://www.trainandtrooper.com/ has narrow gauge brass Forneys. I don’t think they are dcc.

Enjoy

Bill - A lot depends on just what specifically you mean by “Forney” locomotive. The true Forneys had an 0-4-4 wheel arrangement and were largely narrow gauge engines. However, there was quite a range in the quite similar standard gauge, bi-directional running, locomotives sometimes also called Forneys but more often referred to as “Suburbans”, which came in several wheel configuration.

A great many Forneys and Suburbans ran on various elevated urban lines, suburban commuter railroads and in various industries. MTS has offered both Forneys and Suburban designs in HO in the not too distant past. Between 1960 and say about 1980, quite a number of small, standard gauge, Forneys/Suburbans were imported in brass. Gem brought in a small, bi-directional, “convertible” suburban that could be built in a number of possible wheel arrangements between 2-6-2, 2-4-2, 0-6-2, and 0-4-2. These were also offered by two other dealers. Several true Forneys were also brought in during these years. However, I recall only one very limited run Formey in plastic kit form ever being offered.

The MTS (brass) Forney’s are representative of the locomotives of the New York Elevated system, and were made with either a “wood” cab or a “steel” cab. These were not DCC equipped. As a very small locomotive, there is not a great deal of extra space for added electronics. When the NYC system electrified, many of these locomotives made their way to logging lines across the south. I have one of these MTS Forneys as my mill switcher. It is not a bad runner, although I would prefer it to have been geared a little slower. I had to do some “tweaking” of the arm supporting the rear truck - once I got the locomotive “balanced” properly it runs pretty well for such a small light-weight locomotive.

THese are emulating the Maine 2 foot narrow gage in HOn30, and can run on N scale track. They are not DCC equipped, but if there is a way of installing a decoder, Matt at Train & Trooper will know how to do it.

Thank you.
