I’ve noticed that there is no handy indicator to inform someone has received a PM (started or received a “conversation” in the parlance of this forum) other than to regularly check one’s own profile. Quite frankly, this is more than 10+ years behind-the-times than even the most simplest of personal forums. Unless I’m missing something, must I always post a specific message in one of the threads that I will be sending a personal message to a specific member? I’ve missed out on some interesting conversations because I wasn’t aware that I had received any replies several years ago.
Also, I’ve been searching for a member (whose moniker I cannot remember) who is interested in modular synthesizers. The search function has yielded nothing. The subject may seem inappropriate to this forum, but in fact, I’m interested in creating a MIDI controlled bank of railroad sounds that I can apply to a DC system. So, how do I find this member?
As much as I enjoy this forum, I think it could use a slight upgrade or two.
Anyone else have any suggestions to make this forum just a bit user friendly?
In your profile box at the right, in the column, one of the options is forum alerts. Enter that, enter your profile, and change what seems appropriate to receive alerts.
Right margin - click on (Edit) aftefr Public Profile
Scroll down on the Edit Profile page
Look at Site Options. You want “Yes” for Enable Conversation Notifications
Scroll down further
Look at “Email Configuation”
Add your email in field “Private Email”
Make sure “Receive email” says “yes”
Scroll to bottom of page, click on button “Update Profile”.
Now how do I go about figuring who the forum member is that is interested in modular synthesizers? Is there a trick to using the search function, or do I just post an OT thread in the general forum?
Right margin, “Search our community”
Click on drop down box “In” under text box, choose “Model Railroader Forums”
Enter text modular synthesizers in the search box
Click on “search”.
Stein, you are a Godsend. Not only do you offer excellent layout design advice, you also come across with seemingly obscure, yet pertinent information.
When someone starts or continues a Conversation with me, I not only receive a personal email with the entire text of the Conversation, but next to the word Conversations in the box on the right side of this page, a number appears such as 1, 2, 3, or whatever to indicate the number of Conversations awaiting my attention.
Every forum’s operations can be different so just because you are a moderator on 2 other forums doesn’t mean you will know how to use every forum you come across. They can be different.
Besides setting your profile for email notifications, you can see that you have conversations in the box on the right side margin here just under the black/green/blue box that is your “sign in box”- where it says in light blue clickable links “public profile {Edit}; Change Avatar; CONVERSATIONS”, etc. It will be marked with a number if you have one waiting.
Since you reference conversations form “years ago”, and since you have only 72 postings to your credit, I take it you don’t much use this forum. Perhaps if you visited/participated more, you would catch your conversations {used to be called "PM"s or Private Messages.
To contact someone with a PM, just go to the posting they have in a thread and click the light blue link at the bottom right side of their post that says “start converstion”. WHen they reply, if you have your email notifications set correctly you will get a copy of their return message to you. If you don’t know their screen name here, you may have to search by topic they participated in as suggested.
[#welcome] back, and hope you enjoy more of the forum more often!
Thanks to everyone who helped me out. After a good night’s rest I looked at my profile settings again and realized I had set everything years ago. Lousy eyesight + a groggy head makes for a grumpy (or in my case, silly) old man.
-G, when I first joined the forum I was all set to begin my next layout. Unfortunately, after 2 consecutive years of devastating flooding and having to rebuild my home my layout plans fell way down the to-do list. It’s only been within the past year that I finally have the funds/means to consider getting back into the hobby.
I have been lurking the forum the past few years. However, as much as I’ve enjoyed reading the various threads, it’s also been a reminder of the various joys my neighbors and I have had to do without just to get our lives back on track (no pun intended). Hopefully, the new concrete flood barriers will do their job and divert any future flood waters away from our neighborhood.
Thank you Sir. I appreciate that and I definitely will participate more often. I like the company here.
Hmmm…don’t count on it. Sorry to hear of your misfortune. I can appreciate it. The area I live in flooded in '05, '06 and again this past September '11. Each flood worse than the last. THe last one devasting an entire town for example. SInce the…what, 1950’s{?} they have had flood retaining walls, very thick {about 10 feet across at the top} and well built dikes, and the like to protect neighborhoods from our wonderful river and creeks and streams.
None of that helped. The flood waters in September topped the floodwalls, broke around and through dikes, and devasted a lot of areas around here…in a matter of about 6-8 hours of FLASH FLOODING. Hospitals, Nursing homes etc, have been devastated or damaged. One hospital erected a flood wall of its own after teh '06 did in it’s bottom floors and it held for '11 flood.
We were high and dry, but it sure is tough to throw out garbage cans full of food from the freezer and the separate refer/freezer when the power stays out for days and days on end because the waters took out {once again} the electric power station. We now have a generator.
I expect the next flood to be sooner rather than later and worse than this last one.
On the bright side, if you are willing to risk it, there are plenty of “nice” houses going for a mere $10k- $20 k or so IF you want to rebuild in the flood plain!
