Forum Running Slower?

Is the forum a lot slower than it used to be? It seems to take almost twice as long for a page to load as it used to. I’m running IE7, XP Pro, DSL, P6 chip. Is this what we can expect or will the speed get a boost soon?

Phew! I’m not the only one getting that problem!

Me too. Its a little slower but not enough to were its annoying.

I’m having no problem at all. If anything it’s even faster for me. I’m on broadband cable using Firefox on Windows XP Pro. My computer has an AMD Athlon X2 processor and 4 gigs of RAM and it simply flies.

Possibly the ads that appear on the side of the pages is slowing things down. The ads help pay for the forum.

Hmmmmmmm…works fine for me. Windows XP and IE7. Jamie

I am finding it a bit slow…almost double. I only have 512 RAM, so that may be it. I also find that when I type a reply, it wants to run out the right side of the text box and I can’t see all of the message.

Crandell,

If you are using XP with only 512MB of RAM, I would expect your PC to perform slowly on all tasks. Doubling your RAM is the cheapest way to increase the performance of your PC. What browser are you using? As I type these lines, they automatically wrap when they reach the end of the white space available for typing.

Don Z.

It’s faster for me but only because it was a real slug before.

At the end of the day, a forum is just a database and the more data in it, the longer it will take to resolve.

Something to make you think twice about before making a trivial post… [8D]

Vista Home premium. Firefox 3.0, Works well for me. As others indicated, it seems maybe a touch faster.

Don, I had used IE7 up until yesterday when I couldn’t get the text wrap to work. I figured, what the heck, and updated to IE8. This morning, no improvement. Then, just in the past hour, the text wrap has begun to work.

I guess we should give credit to Erik and his staff. They are obviously very keen to get the complaints down to zero.

I bought a cheapie demo off the shelf at Staples nearly four years ago, a VIAO from Sony. I like it, but you and I know that it is a dated package. I don’t do a lot of gaming and stuff…just file storage, basic photo manipulation, and internet. I have decided to take the 'puter in and have it both cleaned and upgraded over the Christmas break.

Well I am now at the daughter’s on a different computer - it’s still slow!! My son-in-law has a degree in computer programming and a 1 year old computer! He is running Windows XP Pro, IE8, etc (I’ll ask him when he gets up about the chip- memory etc) As I am retired, I spend 4 to 12 hours a day on the internet, and see absolutely no difference on ANY other sites as to speed. I can download a 15-20 video clip in 15 sec or less, so I think it’s something about the net site here, rather that my or his computer. Now I just went to add a smiley and can’t find the daXX smiley box!! They are under options, but copy/paste doesn’t work!!! Oh great - now I can’t get the preview to come up!!! One more problem - why do I have to hit the back button so many times to get back to the forum page!!! I thing I may edit my subject title to this new forum SUCKS!!! Oops - already used!!

How the heck are you running a newer platform (XP, Vista, etc) with just 512 megs or RAM? I didn’t think that was possible. No wonder you have speed problems. Your system is choking to death. Get up off some green and snap a 1 gig module in there and raise the speed limit.[:)] You’ll be amazed how much faster it will run.

The “new” forum works fine for me…fast as always.

Windows XP, with 512 megs of RAM and a decent processor will be fine for the average computer user. Unless you’re getting deep into Photoshop’s filters and spooky voodoo magic, you’ll be just fine.

Now, if you’re running VISTA, or trying to run VISTA on 512, then that’s gonna be a big issue.

The speed issue everyone is experiencing:

You may reach a website hosted in Timbuctoo, Iowa in a few milliseconds depending on a myriad of different networking related conditions. Under the same conditions, you’ll reach a site hosted halfway across the world a couple more milliseconds on top of that. BUT if for whatever reason there’s a data crunch somewhere due to a broken data pipeline, or a couple DNS servers out of whack sending your request every other direction then to the host, it’s going to take a little longer.

You could also have a lightning fast connection, and if there’s ten thousand people trying to use the same “neighborhood” of resources around you, it’s going to crawl like an ant.

Ivanhen, there is nothing wrong with your computer. It’s the bells and whistles, and especially the extra graphic content. Having worked in IT for the last 10 years I have just about never seen a “new and improved” version of any program and/or website that didn’t run slower than it’s predecessor. Programmers design for the capacity of the most current systems, with little or no thought to those of us who can’t afford to upgrade their systems every three years. That BTW is the “industry standard” for computer obsolesence.

As some posters have stated, the Firefox web browser can deliver slightly faster performance, and it’s a free download. I have an XP machine that has both IE7 and Firefox 3.03. My son swears by the Firefox browser though to me it seems to take a lot longer to initialize than the IE browser. But once it’s up, it is a little faster.

The computer you’re using can have a lotb to with iut as well. My parents desktop computer is one I built for them. It has an AMD X2 processor with 2 gigs RAM and XP Home on a cable connection and it flies. On the other hand, there’s my mother’s Dell notebook. It has an Intel Celliron D processor which in my opinion is one of the slowest processors on the planet, 2 gigs RAM and XP Pro. It’s on the very same cable connection as the desktop unit. Going flat-out it may download this site in a couple of minutes. Guess which of their two computers doesn’t get much use.

My computer is 3 years old running XP 512m ram and its just fine. I’m not having any speed problem. with this new forum

Comparing an AMD X2 to a Intel Celeron D is like comparing apples to oranges.

Everything else being equal, it’s not the processor that’s going to cause the issue with browsing this site. It could be anything from a poor wireless receiver (if on WiFi) to partially broken wires in an ethernet cable, etc.

my bet for the slowness is the fact that the DB seems to have completely re-indexed itself. For me, was nearly as fast as the (really) old forums on Weds, but has steadily gotten faster as time has passed.
