Forum slowness

Not to complain. Has the MR Forum server seemed to be going “offline” quite a bit the last 2-3 days? I’ve had problems either getting on the forum or not being able to move from one page to another. [Edit: I only have dial-up. These problems don’t seem to affect other websites.]

Yesterday there was a couple of instances where Firefox stated that the server couldn’t be found. (One for about a 2-hour period.) Today there was an instance for about 10-15 minutes where I was on the forum but I couldn’t reply to a post so I went and browsed other websites in the meantime. I’m just curious if the rest of you have had any problems, as well.

I haven’t e-mailed Bergie, yet but may for clarification.

Tom

Have not encountered any problems despite being on dial-up on IE. I wonder if there may be a “mis-match” between the Forum software and Foxfire. Bergie may be able to shed some light on the subject.

Will

I had that issue today for about 45 minutes between 12:45 and 1:30 EST, and could not access the MR forums site and got several server error messages.

Tom

Spyware will sometimes slow your computer down

their are lots of free downloads out there to combat this

i have had no problems today

C & O Fan,

Note taken but no problems with Spyware. The issues mentioned seem to me server related…

Tom

I’ve noticed a couple of times delays in switching between threads/topic listing, but overall no problems getting on the site.

Jim

I’ve noticed a LOT of forum slowdowns recently… Perhaps there’s some problems with the DB server(s) controlling the forums - bad HDD, bad RAM, something of that nature.

Firefox, even the newly released 2.0 has always worked OK for me with this site. I’ve had numerous problems with the various IE7 releases however, especially when it comes to BB code related to quoting another post or inserting an image.

WHen I reply there’s ALWAYS a lag before I can actually type, Firefox claims to be loading “google metrics” or something. Interestingly, with the releae version of IE7, that doesn;t happen, I can click reply and almost instantly be able to start typing.

Tom, I have had loading and downloading problems for several days. Sometimes it is slick, other times I have to exit IE and do something for 10 minutes. The site is almost always back up when I return.

P.S. - so, yes, others are having the same symptoms.

Tom, I had a problem late last night, took forever to open a page on the forum, green bar not moving hardly at all. I finally just shut down and went to bed. I have hispeed internet at 3meg too, so this was a server problem.

i have John Carroll’s OC3 [8D] (45 m/bit each way, though its shared between everyone on campus)… and this site sometimes is slower than dialup…

The same is happening to me. On high speed also. Can come off of Atlas forum w/o any trouble and find once on Trains.com switching pages can take minutes. I also notice that using the back button will not highlight the post just return to where you left.

Clicking on the General Discussion will highlight but return to top of 1st page- a real pain if you were on pg 2 or ?. The page display really needs to be shown at top and bottom and the page you are on should show as highlighted.

Didn’t mind the new forum at first but it is starting to show it’s bugs and they can be a pain.

Been working great here since the changeover in July.

I’ve been noticing this too. I emailed support and they said it’s a technical problem with their server. I didn’t think it was something with my system. I’m using hispeed internet through a cable modem, 3 meg hookup with 4500 kb download speed. I think about a website, I’m there. I haven’t been having this problem anywhere else, just trains.com.

An OC-3 is 155mbs. A DS-3 is 45mbs.

I thought that might be the case. It would be kinda nice to receive a post-it on the forum from Kalmbach stating that they are working on some issues and that we might expect some occasional delays logging on, or something to that effect.

Thanks for the info, Jeffrey! [:)]

I have a dedicated DSL Line which is pretty fast down and 600 up. The Forums are running pretty good with the software that I use.

Sometimes if it is not responsive, I would ping it and verify that the server itself is up and running. Once in a while it is not. No worries.

I try to write posts on notepad and try again later in the day.

Weekend beofre last I was completely unable to log on and nothing would get round it… hence I vanished for a week.

E mails to MRR eventually found a way to get me back in… so I re-appeared.

Yesterday I got this e mail, which I think it is fair to copy here…

I am glad you got in. We are not sure what is going on. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. We were down last night from 11:00 pm and are working on getting back up.

Thank you for your patience. We will get this resolved.

Sincerely,
Michelle

(The third sentence rfers to the way I got back in - I think).

It can be frustrating when I can’t get in or it really slows down, especially if I’m in the middle of a really good thread… but we’re getting this service free and it’s about the most heavy traffic and broadest spread of material I’ve found… so I keep coming back.
