I am uncool or an old codger or whatever, so I am sorry but I do not understand some of the things I read in here. [%-)]

Would some of you guys who know about cool abbreviations and terms please enlighten me??

A couple to start with.

  • LHS - that was easy “Local Hobby Shop”? - reckon I got that one.
  • LOL - this one has me beaten. Seems to be some expression of glee or amusement. But what the abbreviation stands for has me stumped.
  • bump - that was a one word post. It has got to mean something in cool speak. Something different to what it means in English.

I would bet that there are more people out there who are similarly challenged comprehending forum lingo.

I did try FAQ - there we go again with the cute abbreviations - but found nothing there.

Better to ask a dumb question than to make a stupid mistake.[:I] Or is it?

Bump I think means that the post [as in what this is here] was moved or ‘bumped’ to another area of the forum.
LOL means 'laughing out loud"
FAQ means ‘frequently asked questions’.
And don’t worry about asking, I didn’t know this when I started on the net either [net = internet]
So ask away. I am sure someone will help. [:)]

Bump - is a way for someone to move the thread back to the top of the forum. Usually, once a thread has fallen to the third page, very few people will see it. Therefore, the original poster or someone who it very interested in more responses will simply put a one word reply BUMP which will drive the thread to the top.

OBTW, do this more than twice to any particular thread and you will not be well received.

OBTW - Oh, By The Way

Thanks Stephen,

Laughing out loud!! Didn’t think of that. I was stuck with the LO being “little ole” then could not get what the last L was for.

I don’t think you have the “bump” meaning right from the context. See if anyone else comes up with it.

Oh yeah, FAQ I have known of for ages. Thanks again.

Thanks Gumby,

Like that favourite quote: “The best-informed man is not necessarily the wisest. Indeed there is a danger that precisely in the multiplicity of his knowledge he will lose sight of what is essential.” - Dietrich Bonhoeffer

There are some exceptions though

ROTFLMAO!

hahaha, Fundy has the idea

If you like I could go on for hours with different abbreviations, but I would bore you.

Other common online post abbreviations:

OTOH: On the other hand.
FWIW: For what it’s worth.
IMO: In my opinion, also sometimes IMHO: In my humble opinion.
VBG: Very big grin.
YMMV: Your mileage may vary.

And there are lots more … here’s a list:

However, LHS is specific to model and hobby forums, for obvious reasons. [swg]

Here is a link to acronym’s commonly used on the internet…

I am sure this list is more that you will ever need or use.

I use LOL to mean lots of luck. I’ll bet that confuses people.

Another old one from the same era as LSMFT is SNAFU - situation normal: all fouled (or your favorite f-word) up.
