One of the friends of mine on the forum (Keith) told me that the forum this year is abnormally slow, and that the reason is probably the flamewars lately. But, the last time he told me that was a few weeks ago. But now, it seems pretty busy to me.
This would be more of a question for long time, continuous memebers. How? Well, 2 new threads a day and just a few replies is much slower than 10 new threads a day and 20 replies! [:)] Havent you noticed that the forum seems a little busier than a few months ago?
It does seem just a teensy bit slower than usual for this time of year. Usually we’re getting 1-1/2 pages of new posts/threads per 24 hrs. by now. We seem to be up to about 1 page of new ones right now. I’ll bet by Christmas things will be busier though.
OTOH, at this time 5 years ago things were really slowwwwwww. This forum didn’t really pick up steam until about 2004 (after the OGR debacle).
OGR briefly experimented with making their forum subscription-only, and the result was a lot of people started looking for other forums, and anything that wasn’t OGR grew.
“This site is now dying” - You should have been here four years ago.
I have seen people ask if engine x is better than engine z or engine y. Well if I don’t own one of those engines, I’m not going to give you a reply, because I don’t know. If you are using a transformer that I do not have any experience with, you are not going to get an answer from me. If you ask how to build benchwork, well I have a many posts with photos and drawings that you can see if you do a search plus I usually post the post again for people if asked.
Yes, there is a sorta of a club. Many of us know each other personally because we have made an effort. (Did you ever read about the big grits raid in Harrisburg, PA?) I have traveled over 100 miles one way just to meet a forum member. Forum members have visited my layout. I have personally met forum members from New York, North Carolina and all of Ohio. I email regularly to members in Iowa, North Carolina, Ohio, New York, Maryland, Alabama, Georgia, California and Pennsylvania. For the last two years, about ten members of the forum have met at a train show in Cleveland.
Those folks who at a minimum put their state of residence in their signiture or avatar, will tell you that they get emails telling them about train shows and if they would like to meet for coffee or other adult beverage. [:D] How do you think they all get together at York every year?
