Found a Cool Logging Site (Pictures)

I spent all day downloading over 700 logging pictures ranging in date from 1900 to 1943. I had a hard time deciding which 2 photos I was going to use as samples. In themselves they are don’t show as much as some photos do about life as a logger/railroader but they both represent the kinds of thing you’ll find. It covered everything from tressel building to supply depots.

Both these photos are set in 1930.

The site is: http://content.lib.washington.edu/clarkkinseyweb/index.html

A logging Camp

Thankya space mouse. Those are great.

Chip,

Cool photos! [:)] Have you thought about taking a trip on either the Cass Scenic RR or the Durbin Greenbriar Valley Railway in WV? Cass has a number of Shays (six, I believe) and the Durbin Greenbriar has a Climax on one of it’s three excursions. Saw them both recently on the PBS series, “Great Scenic Railway Journeys”. Might be a bit of a drive for you but not too outrageous from your neck of the woods. I would think that it would be especially nice during the fall, when the leaves are changing.

Tom

I have thought about it, in fact our club has thought about it.

the second photo is great , 3 loco’s working the lumber camp , looks like it would be a perfect scene for someone interested in modelling the lumber industry , heck you could build a layout just from that scene !

You wouldn’t believe the stuff I found. Logging camps, loading sites, log dumps, mill ponds, different shops, tons of loco shots, speeders, pile drivers, steam shovels, gas lumber carriers (look like model T’s on stilts), trestles, supply depots… If it was logging, there’s a picture.

SpaceMouse,

Great resource for prototype logging operations of the Pacific North West.

Thanks,

Ryan

Gotta love articulated tank engines.[:D]

It’s incredible isn’t it?

does any one make a model of a saddle tank mallet. I want one now!!!

Nevermind[:I][:I][:I]

Man, I typed in logging and searched all the collections, got 160 hits in that library!!!

Wow that’s quite a collection, Ken.

Just to the right of the keyword search is a search by subject. Choose Railroad. [:D]
