Is their a reward for these two lost locos? They sure did stray a long way from home. I noticed them down here in Athens, GA a few weeks ago on the CSX (Seaboard) line. CSX has been using a lot of borrowed and leased power, but these two were by far the rarest.
BTW it has something stenciled next to the SD40-2 that I can’t quite make out. It is either DR7-30A or DRI-30A I can’t really tell. Does anybody know what this means?

The small numbers and letters you noticed I believe are class marking. Just what the mean and why the CP uses them I not clear on.
Maybe some up north can help.
It’s DRF-30A. This is just CP’s classification for the units
DRF= Diesel Road Freight
30= horspower in 100s (30*100=3000)
A= sub class
other letters are
DRS = Diesel Road Switcher
DPA = Diesel Passenger A-unit.
There must be a list on the internet somewhere.
On those porches, if I’m not mistaken the 16 cylinder SD40-2prime mover & body sits on an SD45 chassis designed for the 20 cylinder 645 series diesel. This is why you have the short carbody on a longer chassis.
I remember that as a teen years ago, I didn’t like the porches at first [|(], but they grew on me as this class of engines became an all time favorite with Class 1s and Railfans alike[:D][8D] . The profile, IMHO, is that of a tough, durable, well-built American machine
