FRED's on Amtrak?

Hey all,

I know the superliners have the two rear red lights (Fred’s) in the back of the train. I am wiring my pullman cars for lights and want to know where these would go on that type of coach. Im modeling early 70’s when amtrak just started so I need something that would fit. Any ideas or pictures would be much appreciated!

A “FRED” is a marker light, but all marker lights are not FRED’s.

A modern FRED is normally a combination marker light, motion sensor, air pressure gauge, telemetry device and potentially several other things that sits on the coupler of a car. The markers on an Amtrak car are two bulbs behind a pair of red lenses.

If you are putting markers on a Pullman car they would probably be separate markers hung on the sides. If you are doing superliners, then the markers would be built into the car ends.

Try Geno Dailey’s site, he has lots of Amtrak Roster photos (http://www.trainweb.org/amtrakpix/index.html)

Early Amtrak trains typically had a single red marker light on the rear of the train. It was usually mounted on the end gate or door of the last car.

Looks like this:

Acronym for Flashing Rear End Device [:)].
