In a recent topic thread, I learned about the Presidents Choice 2-10-2 CNR steam loco.
Since then, I have been looking at modeling a freelanced Canadian National steam engine, based upon the engines at the Ohio Central and other CNR engines in the USA and Canada.
The engine I want mine to look like (but not exactally like) is this one
The first locomotive of the right size and wheel arrangement that comes to mind is the light USRA Pacific - The least costly one would be IHC version. The domes are in the wrong places and are the wrong shape, and the boiler is more “tapered” than the CN loco. A new cab would help. The tender is roughly similar, and if fitted with an oil tank would look OK.
The cylindrical device above the smokebox is an “Elesco Feed Water Heater” and these are (or were) available from Cal Scale. I don’t know about CN number plates, but I’m sure they’d be available. The illuminated number boards should be available also. You might need a longer stack to give the right appearance.
There were later CN pacifics that could be more easily represented by the IHC pacific.
I was browsing e-bay the day it was posted and couldn’t believe he was starting the bidding off at $10.00 for a brass locomotive. From the moment I saw the photos of the brass version I knew I wanted to kitbash a loco like this one. I took a look around and found out that the Bowser K-11 Pacific has a similar boiler contour and the domes are in close enough locations for the J-7 Pacific (judging from the photo’s on the website). I also took a look at other models, but haven’t found a pacific model to start with that has a straight boiler and not a tapered one. I also don’t quite feel like drilling holes in a model and trying to fill in large ones entirly, and haven’t found a starter model simlar to the K-3-g’s of the CNR. Anyway I think I might settle for the Bowser locomotive, and a J-7 as the wheels aren’t that noticeably small. Hopefully over the Christmas Holiday Break from school I can get to a hobby shop and order one.
Thanks for that information, Andre. I think I’ll have to pick up a copy of that MRR too. Hopefully my LHS will have it. They have piles of old issues from the 70’s and 80’s so hopefully they have that one too.
