Freight car scales for a layout

So i’ve seen them but just cant seem to find it when i put it in my search’s on walthers and such. But I’m looking for scale’s to put right on the layout and it reads out on a panel. Kind of like the one that’s in the new Project layout that MR just did the Virginian. Just cant seem to locate it. any help would be great.

thanks,

It appears that MR used the following products:

Walthers Cornerstone HO Track Scales 933-3199 http://www.walthers.com/exec/productinfo/933-3199

and

Boulder Creek Engineering - http://www.bouldercreekengineering.com/weighstation.php

I picked up the Walthers kit via eBay last January, and I’ll most likely pick up one of electronics in the future, when I get around to that part of my shelf empire.

Hope this helps,

Yup thats the one. Thank you so much Gil!!!

Gil,

That ‘electronic’ one does not really ‘weigh’ the car - it has photo-cells that detect a car and it give a generic weight depending on how you have the configuration switches set. It is sort of ‘cool’ and would add some operational interest.

Jim

I know that it doesn’t weigh the cars - but it adds to the operations - it will be one of the last things I get and install - It even has a bell/buzzer to drive the operator crazy - good thing that can be turned off!

And you can add lights (via LEDs) to let the crew know when they can move the cars, so you can “weigh” the next one.

MR (I think it was MR) had an article on how to build your own several years ago. I don’t recall the year or issue. You might start searching here: http://mrr.trains.com/en/Magazine/Annual%20Index.aspx if no one else can help you.

It was an interesting build, involving two cut down switches and a homemade variable transformer on a spring.
