How long do freight car wheel bearings last? How can you tell if they are going bad (pounding sound)? If a railroad has to change bearings or wheel on a car belonging to another railroad, do they charge the other railroad and is there an agreed upon rate?
i dont know off hand how long a wheel bearing will last in service befor it needs replaces…but if you are hearing a pounding sound when a train car is going by you…its not a wheel bearing…its a flatspot on the steel wheel itself…
