Freight cars

What happens to cars that are not to be humped when they get to a classification yard? Dont they all go over the hump, or do they take these cars out first?[?]

That is what is suppost to happen, but we do not live in a perfect world.

They get humped right along with the rest of 'em [;)]

the frieght Yard at princeton in Doesn’t hump the don’t hump cars they set them off
on a sperately designed track.

In theory, the yardmaster has the waybills for the cars placarded “Do Not Hump” and has the pulldown engines switch them out of the cut and take them on the bypass track to the departure yard to be flat switched (no kicking) as appropriate.

This last reply is the correct one: The approach to the hump has a cutout turnout in it, and “do not hump” cars are switched into it, then pulled around the hump to be flat switched.

A typical “do not hump” car would be a tanker carrying propane or hazardous chemicals. By comparison, a boxcar full of Army ammunition would not even make it that far – it would be cut from the train even earlier and run completely around the entire yard to a special area used for such shipments.

Ortner aggregate hoppers are used in my area on Vulcan Materials Company gravel trains- they also say “Do Not Hump.”

Is this because of a danger of the load spilling? (They are open-topped)
