Freight service to return to Wisconsin branch

I live in Selkirk, NEW YORK next to the CSX River Sub to
New Jersey and the South…but in Selkirk we have a hugh
cement plant called La Farge and they ship a lot by rail and receive many coal trains usually 100 cars at a time…Big
business for CSX…

A map would be more useful than a generic photo of a WSOR train.

Amen, Mr. Streeter. Need maps or sketches of areas not familiar to most.

Well, I’ll be darned… I goofed!

To Emory

They don’t make the cement, they make the concrete that is eventually turned INTO cement. I can imagine bulk loads will be taken by hoppers to the nearest cement plant, but the smaller bags for retail sale would be more than likely transported by truck to the nearest hardware stores.

Keep in mind, ladies and gentlemen, that the line could also see future use from other businesses, such as Frac Sand facilities.

I UNDERSTAND THE INBOUND RAW MATERIALS, BUT WHAT ABOUT OUTBOUND BULK CEMENT?

Previous post is incorrect. Concrete is made from cement, not the other way around. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cement and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concrete

So much for the claims about Governor Walker being anti-railroad. Apparently he is not. But he is anti-pork barrel special interest red ink zero benefit bottomless pit spending.

It is a concrete plant. What does a concrete plant do? Raw materials go in by the open hopper or gondola load, which would be sand and stone or gravel. Gravel is more likely in Wisconsin because the state has plenty of of the stuff all over the place. Add water which I assume comes from a well or a nearby lake. Finally the railroad would probably bring in covered hoppers of cement from a cement plant or cement boat transload facility such as one of the facilities on Lake Michigan. Outgoing loads would be handled by those Oshkosh ready-mix trucks. You know, the ones with the engine hanging out the back and the super single steer tires in front. Always appears the truck is driving in reverse. At least to the uninitiated.

Think long term; at some point in the future, service will be restored on the old CNW main between Chicago and Madison. Passenger service.

Great to read this. An old CNW line coming back to life. Something to be said for rail banking lines!

The line runs south from Madison, not between Fitchburg and Oregon. Mostly out of service except at the extreme North end. Why does Fitchburg own any of it??

good for oregon
