Freight station operations
Very useful. I will make good use of this article with the freight station I am using in my yard.
Perfect timing! I’m taking down my old layout and this article is just what I need to help make my new layout better for operations.
Very refreshing tips on LCL operations being a trafic multiplier. My roomsized layout has a freight transfer operation (road-rail) and a warehouse that can use those bridge plates between two box cars on paralell tracks.
I am working on a layout and will be building a freight station. Something to consider, see if you can find a source for old Sanborn Insurance Maps, many are now online and free. Local schools and universitys are another source. There are some great kits that lend themselves to being kitbashed into very credibal models.
This has helped me set up more realistic operations in two ways (1) box cars dedicated to LCL service between two freight stations and (2) including LCL peddler box cars in the daily way freights, destined for a freight station. Appreciated
Good information as Iam building a new layout with freight station operations included timely information
My freind mention adding a LCL operation to my layout. Eventhough I model the Mid 1970’s and Rail LCL was long gone, I did it. I have a boxcar come from the south on a connecting Railroa a nd boxcat from the waet on my Railroad. The cars worked on one side of the freight house at my division point and put in two home road boxcars. The next day they go to a station mid way on my modeled section and the other goes to the last station. The next day the operation is revesed. It added more switching, which I enjoy.

Very useful information, and my son Gavin and I will use it on our 1/29 Somerville and St Francis River Railway, which has 3 freight stations and 3 interchanges.
Keep up the good work at MR!
Ive used a freight station and it added a lot of variety …never thought about re-loading Reefers with merchandise …great idea for more switching. Thinking Id take an empty reefer , re-load with something destined for a foreign road, switch the car to my Interchange and send it off on the next train arriving from a foriegn road
Something I never thought about incorporating into a layout.
A realistic spot for all kinds of box cars and reefers. Super idea.
I’m going to have a freighthouse like the CNW 28th street freight house with an indoor track with 3 tracks on the outside.
