It comes on at 7:00pm and again at 11:00pm on the history channel!
Adjusting for your time, that’s 6 and 10 my time. Thanks.
memphis is CDT like us, so its still 7pm. Modern Marvels
Thanks for the heads up![tup]
so far so good. I think I like this one a little bit better than boneyards. I wont post any details till later. Dont want to spoil the show for anyone.
Author Jim Boyd is shown being interviewed at the Whippany Railway Museum here in Whippany, NJ, as is the older gent that worked for the D&H. I recognized the Morristown & Erie caboose and the 0-6-0 behind them immediately. [8D]
Thanks. I figured it out.
Two factual faults I heard:
1). Cabooses were eliminated on most trains by the FRED in the 1980’s, not the early 1970’s as said in the show.
2). Modern TOFC service started on the Chicago Great Western and the New Haven in 1937, not in the 1950’s as said in the show.
I did enjoy Jim Boyd’s recollections and knowledge. He came across quite well without any of the “ums” and other painful silences that usually happen when non-media types are interviewed on camera. His sense of humor came through the TV as in his L&HR book where his author photo shows him standing next to a “No Tresspassing” sign with the caption, “Boyd where prohibited”. [:)]

I like those Modern Marvel shows, and the Voyages series…but they get a LOT of stuff wrong, guess you can’t fault them too much, the info is only as good as the source and anyone who’s ever tried Wikepedia will tell you, the source is frequently wrong.
But all in all those shows are interesting and do provide some good info.
BTW…that freight trains segment has been on about 20 times in the last year or so. So if you didn’t get to see it…it’ll be back on soon![(-D]

Don’t sweat it dude, this episode was first broadcast September 2006.
Looking through TV.com, I see Modern Marvel has well over 400 episodes, many NOT modern by any stretch (Hadrian’s Wall, HMS Victory, Sherman Tank, Great Wall of China, Castles & Dungeons) and some very esoteric (albiet one I’d like to see is ‘The Loading Dock’, also, they did one on ‘Models’ in 2002, but no info was available on tv.com about it).
Some of the Modern Marvel techs seem to be techs only in a Sid Mierer Civ 4 concept (Money, Fire, Leather, Cotton), and some shows seem ultra specialized - ‘Front Line Reporting’, ‘Guns of the Russian Military’, and others just plain weird: ‘Barbarian Battle Tech’, ‘James Bond Gadgets (part 1 & 2)!’
And Modern Marvels, at least in it’s early years (its been around since 1995) has done a number of shows on railroads, including the Trans-Siberian Railroad, Bullet Trains, NYC Subway, and the Chunnel.
Heh, first episode: ‘The Transcontinential Railroad’ - Not so much Modern, there.
12th episode - ‘Pyramids: Majesty & Mystery’ - from the beginning, very non-modern Modern Marvels! And I thought ‘Modern Marvels: 60s Tech’ was a joke…
It was pretty good. Comes on again at 12:00 A.M on the east coast. Boneyard was a little more interesting to me, but I learned a little tonight.

Thanks for the heads up. Just looked, it is on at midnight here in The Deep South, so will be watching then. Was probably on earlier, but just now read your post. I catch a few train shows on the RFD channel when they have them. Like the historic shows most of all. Thanks again for posting this. [C):-)] Rob
Just read this post, it’s 1:17 am EDT here.
That episode of Modern Marvels just ended 17 minutes ago and I totally missed it.
Instead, I just sat here in my “train” room and tracked my ebay sales and purchases and read a bunch of boring threads, all the while “Frasier” was providing ambient backround noise for me to keep me awake. And then, just as I was about to log-off, I found THIS.
To think, I could have had the sound of turbos, dynos, Leslies and Nathans instead, and only a click away.
Anybody know when’s the next time it’ll be aired?
Thanks,
Oh, you lucky people.
Here in the dessicated desert, the History Channel gave me altogether too much history about motorcycles, and not a microsecond worth of trains. Instead of Jim Boyd, I had Jesse James (West Coast Choppers.) [:(]
So I switched to the Military Channel and watched tanks. [:-^]

nickl02 mentioned Boneyards; while there was a Modern Marvels episode called Boneyards (#402 - yay Tv.com), apparently there is now also a series, ‘Boneyards’ - I believe the commercials yesterday on the Motorcycle Marvels (that Chuck so readily dismissed [xx(] ) were pushing the Military/Battlefield reclamation episode - however, starting 14 July 2007, and for several dates afterward, they will air the Railroad salvage/reclamation episode. I am not certain if this episode has been broadcast before (actually, judging from comments on the HC site, it has aired at least once - rather hard to tell), but I haven’t seen it, it sounds interesting, and so I’ll record it. (I already know what happens to retired aircraft - Mythbusters Jamie & Adam purchase them and destroy them dispproving some myth or another)
And Chuck, don’t tell me you didn’t like the 1868 steam powered proto-moto-cycle? Or the turn-of-the-past-century board track racers with no Throttle & no brakes (wide-open/full throttle)? Come-on, at least the Helicopter-Engined bike should have got your attention (it got Jay Leno’s)
Chutton01-That Military Boneyards next week looked pretty good. Have to check that out.
And what does the “F” REALLY stand for in FRED’s.[:-^]
The footage in the hump yard was pretty cool! Most folks don’t get to see that perspective as the cars are rolled down the hill and sorted. [tup]

I’m guessing “FLASHING”. But, it’s probably a trick question.
Chutton01-That Military Boneyards next week looked pretty good. Have to check that out.
I’m confused - the Military (well, Battlefield) Boneyard is listed as beingtonight (12 July) @ 9:00PM EDT & tomorrow (13 July) @ 1:00AM … Unless Modern Marvel’s fact checkers are now setting up the broadcast schedule listings…
