FreightCar America will get NS rolling

From the Roanoke Times:

"FreightCar America won a duel to build the first 1,600 new coal cars
that Norfolk Southern Railway will need to overhaul its fleet, and
the cars will be assembled in Roanoke’s East End Shops.

“The Norfolk Southern order is a super development for Roanoke,
because we intend to build all of the cars there,” said John Carroll,
president of FreightCar America.

"FreightCar’s announcement Friday could mean a second production line
might be started in the East End Shops, and there’s a slight chance
it could add a few jobs to the 500 already there, Carroll said.

“The cars, with mostly aluminum bodies that can hold more coal than
older steel ones, are to be delivered to NS in 2007 as the railroad
begins replacing tens of thousands of cars.”
