Friday Trivia question

I thought I might start a Friday Trivia questions for those that are intersted. The answer I will try to give on Mondays. So lets start . Name the first diesal Engine used in the E unit and extra ponts if you can give the HP.

EA/B in 1937, 1800 HP

Sorry try again

Winton 201-A, 1800 HP. Diesel was a model EA.

Oh, you didn’t say that Google wasn’t allowed, did you?

What did I win?

The first diesel engine used was the Winton model 201-A 12-cylinder model with 8x10-inch bores producing 900 horsepower. Each E unit had two of these engines for a total of 1800 horsepower for each locomotive.

Mark

First E unit produced by EMD used two Winton 201-A’s producing 900 hp each for a total of 1800 hp.

There were several Winton 201-A model versions, producing different horsepowers. For instance, there was the 8-cylinder model used in the Budd streamlined train, the 16 cylinder used on submarines, and the 12 cylinder for the early Es and some switchers. Each cylinder would produce about 75 horsepower.

Google allowed , sorry try again

Oh, dear God…it is a trick question…there is no such thing as a diesal Engine. I win, what do I get?

David B

LOL!

Still looking though but there isn’t a web site that disagrees with the basic facts I already knew, the EA was the first E unit, and it used a pair of Winton 201A’s

Or maybe he means the first diesel with an E unit? Like a Lionel F? [:D]

–Randy

The E3 used two 567 diesels for a total of 2,000hp as did the E4, E5 and E6.
The E7 used two 567A diesels for a total of 2,000hp.
The E8 used two 567B diesels for a total of 2,250 hp
The E9 used two 567C diesels for a total of 2,400hp

LOL![(-D] It’s amazing how many other folks mis-spell it when you try to Google it!
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=diesal

It was an extremely large 12-volt open-frame motor with rubber bands connecting to the axles. It generated about 2HP but oddly enough, had a top speed of 500mph at half-throttle. Needless to say, it could only be safely run on straight tracik and could oly pull 2 25’ four-wheel cars.

Am I close?[:P]

Tom [:D]

Alas, Tom, it was the 40 lb. plastic Accumate couplers. They weren’t up to any more than the two cars.

Crandell:

No wonder! [:O] Didn’t you and I tell them to use Kadees? [:-^]

Tom[:D]

Well, it’s saturday, since we all seem to be wrong, what’s the right answer? [:D]

–Randy

According to my book the first E series locomotives had two 900 hp Winton Vee engines in 1936. They used the same engines as the Bo-Bo Units form 1934. The B&O purchased the first pairs of the A1A-A1A configuration which were 3,600 hp units combined.

Mark I think I may have stated incorrectly that your answer was wrong on Friday. I thought you answer stated two e- units. If I did so please let me correct it know and please acccept my apologies. The answer is (as you correctly stated ) the first E-Unit was produced in 1930 with twin 900 hp Winton diesal engines. So if you guessed Winton engine give yourself 1 mile of main track. If you guessed the bonus question of hp and guessed twin 900s you recieve another 1/2 mile of main line track . FYI to all it will be your responsibilty to keep track of your “track” Good luck to all and I hope to see you again at Fridays next Trivia question.

LOL !!! Spelling has NEVER been my strong point. I typically keep an old worn out Websters handy. It seems to have grown legs and walked off . Sorry for the confusion. Feel free to correct my spelling any time. As for what do you get ? Well I do not know. How about two cross ties ? [:D]

Thanks! Yes, I said two twelve-cylinder Winton diesel engines at 900 hp each.

Score is: me with 1.5 miles, and everyone else with 0.0. By the way, how long is this whole trip going to be? Is there a destination?
