It’s that time of year again when Uncle Pete sends down a steam locomotive to transport a trainload of Denverites up to Cheyenne for the “Daddy of 'em All.” I didn’t do a lot of chasing of the Denver Post Cheyenne Frontier Days Train this year. I caught the train in one location in Brighton on its northbound journey and caught it once getting back into Denver as evening fell.
I have a photographer friend who always says he’d rather be lucky than good. I can certainly sympathize with that. This shot would have been totally dull if I hadn’t lucked out with the monster storm cell lighting up nicely with the last rays of daylight as the train pulled into the yard. Not my favorite shot of 844 ever, but I do like it:
I like it as well; it’s not your standard steam photo. I like the smooth reflections off the boiler and the rippled reflections from the shroud. And the steam blow-off fills in what would otherwise be a dead corner of the image.
Plus, as you mentioned, the colors from the distant storm gives the image a pleasing tone.
Zug - Not seeing the Mars light on the smokebox was weird. Slowly, it’s been growing on me, though. There’s a simplicity to the single headlight that compliments the rest of the locomotive that I appreciate.
