fuel usage

How much fuel does a locomotive use? Dont know what the denominator is … per mile or per hour. I realize the usage will vary based on throttle application and tonnage.

Al Krugs web site covers this very well. He has charts and everything.

Cool! [8D]

Anyone else impressed by the fact that the U-23 has figures very similar to the SD-70MAC? (specifically HP per gallon per hour, and at idle…)

Very intersting and informative website.

VERY informative link. thanks!

Al Krug has an amazing website. One of the best out there on operating side of railroading.

There are some awesome pictures on the site too.(The kind of stuff not everyone gets to see)

gallons per hour is the term… go give you and idea of useage…the territory i ran over…with loaded coal drags… i had 130 loads toping out around 18000 +/- tons on a 98 mile trip… with 2 CW-44-9AC locos…each unit would burn on the trip around 600 gallons…and most of the time the throttle was between anywhere from notch 5 to notch 8…

the new units do more with less fuel… they are all electroinc fuel injected now…so the comptuer gives the prime mover just the right amout of fuel to get the most power out of each stroke of the piston with the least amout of fuel…so there is little to no waste by burning fuel that isnt realy needed…as well as advances in turbo charger technology…

On an average run we make, from Linwood NC to Raleigh NC, 125 miles, several grades with 4 steeper grades, 3 Dash 9 locomotives and average 120 cars 10,000 tons, usually takes around 1,500 gallons, 500 per engine.
